Marmoleum (Forbo) anyone got it?

I’m thinking of getting Marmoleum because of its eco properties - click for the lounge and whole sheet in the kitchen, bathroom and hall but I’ve never talked to anyone who has it.

Is it as durable as they claim? I’ve read some threads from a few years ago where posters said it was prone to scratches and stains which was a surprise to read.

Can anyone share their experiences and help me decide please!?!

I am in the same boat, so can't help sorry. I think the samples seem very tough, but almost too tough, a bit hard underfoot?

Tomatalillo · 27/10/2021 21:22

Hi thanks WhereTheWildThingsArent

It’s still a rare beast it seems. Yes I can imagine it being hard. I’m hoping the Click tiles will have some give. Have you got samples of multiple types?

Perhaps I’ll have to get a few pieces and put it through some tests.

Hope more people will come along soon

I had marmoleum in my last bathroom and I LOVED it. Warm hard wearing and generally brilliant. Will definitely get it again.

Hoppinggreen · 27/10/2021 21:27

I used to work for a supplier
It will need to be fitted by an expert, a lot of fitters will think they can do it because they have experience with vinyl but it’s not the same. You will also need to have it sealed and then stripped and re sealed .
It’s pretty eco friendly and it has a nice soft look but it would be my choice

snowdropsandcrocuses · 27/10/2021 21:28

Hey op. DP is 25 years in flooring and he absolutely loves marmoleum albeit he very rarely gets to fit it. It's a natural product so I believe takes a bit of care/tlc and you want to make sure you get an experienced fitter. He's not here to ask him about the pros and cons right now but I can tell you he wants to fit it in our bathroom when we renovate which seems like a great recommendation to me.

What are your questions specifically? I will
Ask his thoughts when he's home which won't be long.

We have marmoleum in downstairs loo and bathroom. Really like it, looks nice and wears well. Parents have it in their bathrooms and utility and recommended.

Tomatalillo · 27/10/2021 21:41

Hi persephone19, Hoppinggreen and snowdropsandcrocuses

Thanks for your posts 😀 It’s a relief to hear some good experiences!

I don’t mind learning it’s quirks but I’m hoping it wouldn’t be too difficult to care for as have health issues so low ish maintenance is a good thing!

I’m hoping it will be so much easier to keep clean than cream carpet in the open plan area (nightmare and where I would have the click due to size and shape) and easier to mop than old and battered laminate in kitchen and wonky vinyl tiles in the bathroom.

I’ll try ringing some local places and see what experience they have in fitting it.

I haven’t got any samples yet but that’s the next stage. I’m hoping the wood look is fairly realistic but wish it was as realistic as some of the non eco options.

Thanks all 👍

Thanks Cyberworrier good to hear

No one had any issues with scratching then? A poster on an old thread did so I was wondering about furniture and general wear and tear.

I had marmoleum tiles in my last kitchen and absolutely hated them as they were impossible to keep clean and eventually they started to lift from the floor - but that may have been a fitting issue.

I now have it in the bathroom, and where the shower is a bit dodgy with a tendency to get the floor around it damp when it's in use, the floor has lifted a bit and cracked.
And where a cleaner bottle was stood in it and leaked a tiny bit it has made a mark which will not come out.

It looks absolutely beautiful though. Based on my own experiences I would say steer clear of light colours because it does scratch and stain, don't let water stand on or ever, make sure to get it properly fitted and finished and never use any kind of harsh cleaner on it.

choccyscot · 27/10/2021 22:15

We've had it in our bathroom for 10 years and it's still in very good condition. Much softer underfoot than tiles and pretty low maintenance. My mum has it in her kitchen, possibly a few scratches as it's a higher traffic area but still looking good also

Tomatalillo · 27/10/2021 22:25

Thanks BewareTheBeardedDragon and choccyscot 👍

I think we could keep it pretty dry in the bathroom most of the time so that’s good.

I think maybe a pattern resembling slate or granite might be good then in high traffic areas?

The main floor is concrete with hot water pipes going to and from radiators so we’re hoping that wouldn’t be a problem. They get warm but not hot. I am hoping that will be ok for both types. Does your DP know if this will be OK @snowdropsandcrocuses?

Thanks all

We have this in our kitchen. It's.. fine. It has a few marks, not really scratches but dinks where something heavy has hit it. I do feel it's hard to keep really clean but that might be the colour the previous owners chose (a kind of yellowy beige). It's also marked from the table legs over time and is lifting a tiny bit along one length of skirting. We recently needed to replace a small patch due to some building work and it was hugely complicated and inconvenient - to the point where we gave up and put something else down!

I wouldn't rush to have it again but I prefer natural flooring so am probably not the target audience - it's nicer quality than any lino we've had before though!

17to35 · 27/10/2021 22:36

I had it in the bathroom about 20 years ago. I had it replaced about 15 years ago as it had discoloured round the toilet, I have 5 boys.
Others with more pristine habits may have more success.

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/10/2021 22:41

I had it installed in the kitchen of our Edwardian house when we lived in the UK. I absolutely loved it. It was in keeping with the period, a beautiful colour and it smelled of linseed. Comfortable under foot and hard wearing.

It did scratch a bit when we carelessly put the fridge back without putting cardboard down, but you couldn't really see the scratches because of the pattern. We went with the traditional marble-y swirl, very Edwardian scullery!

We had it in our old kitchen. You can sand scratches out.

skippy67 · 28/10/2021 09:40

We have it in our kitchen. It's been down 20 years and still looks great. I find it easy to clean with a spray mop, and ours hasn't scratched at all. Having said that, I won't be getting it again when we redo our kitchen. Nothing to do with the product though. I just fancy a change!

Tomatalillo · 28/10/2021 16:01

Thanks Geneticsbunny and Skippy67

Good to know it’s durable. I’d need to get floor protectors for certain pieces of furniture but looks like it’s otherwise ok.

Thanks!

Hi I have already purchased some MARMOLEUM to fit in my bathroom. I live in Colchester but I am struggling to find someone to fit it. Can you help please?

Piipo · 21/12/2024 13:28

If you’re planning on fitting this yourself and don’t have prior experience stay well away. It is extremely sensitive, complicated and difficult to install. Even if you have a professional fitter lined up, make sure they have a lot of experience specifically with marmoleum. If you can tick these boxes then it’s a good choice.
