Unexpected expensive renovations

In the middle of a mid sized renovation and have found some fairly expensive unexpected and unbudgeted works that need doing in the loft.

In itself it's not a deal breaker, we have the cash available and it's still 'worth' spending the money in terms of what we think the house will be worth in the end but I just feel a bit deflated by it.

It's going to eat into all of the contingency, it's a whole load of new contractors to get in and it's also now delaying everything else we're doing.

Can anyone share with me their coming out of the other side stories to make me feel better pretty please? Grin

It happens, it's a bugger, but it happens. And the worst bit is it's something you probably won't even see once its finished. Like the v expensive unexpected underpinning of a boundary wall we had to do. And the waiting for building control sign off...and neighbour to agree and, and.

But that feels a long time ago now as we are nearing the end of what we are doing. And we know it's been done and signed off which is some security.

I literally started a thread on this very subject yesterday! Everything that can go wrong seems to be going wrong with my build! I need a lotto win urgently!! Grin

it happens all.the.time.
especially with older properties.

when we were renovating our last house we discovered a door to the attached neighbours. only a very flimsy mdf bord covered it. cost £££ to brick up properly and decorate on both sides.

oh and it explained why the noise travelled so well between houses.

You will come out the otherside and you will be a lot wiser

I started a barn conversion, I had owned it for a while, the PP was about to run out so I decided to start the building work instead of reapplying for a PP extension

1 month in to the works I was told I needed underpinning, back half of the property then a month after that the financial crash hit and my lender wouldn't lend anymore

Eventually found another lender so all ok but very stressful at the time

@Justcannotbearsed that's exactly it! It's thousands of pounds worth of work that I will likely never lay my eyes on! Heartbreaking.

But you're through the other side and still in love with your house (?!) so I shall take comfort in that!!
