avoid clifton! clifton moor is the newish build housing estates but clifton itself is um a bit rough! (my in laws live there!!!) when i lived in york, we lived on heworth green which is quite main road but had some lovelyhouses behind in heworth, the downside to heworth is it backs onto tanghall whihc again some areas can be a bit rough.

how about movign into the surrounding areas of york, poppleton is lovely as is fulford, some nice houses and schools in those areas.

ELR · 12/12/2007 14:48

was looking at fulford,
we currently live in croydon so used to rough areas!!!
popplleton looks nice and super cheap dh will need to commute to leeds by motorbike, also what is huntington like

ELR · 12/12/2007 14:49

is poppleton a bit full of old people? what do they have in the village

SquonkaClaus · 12/12/2007 14:50

If you want to be a bit out of York itself this is a nice village, as is this one

got to do school run so will be back later properly - but in the meantime - Copmanthorpe - nice school and v good for Leeds commute

lubyluby · 12/12/2007 14:55

yes huntington is nice too, the secondary school in huntington is good, quite a few friends have moved into the catchment area to get their older kids into the shcool, so if you can find somewhere nice there now could be a good place for the future.

tbh i find tang hall better than clifton, clifton is where you really don;t want to move to. the newer houses on teh estate are nice but the schools are then limited again and you are back into clifton and mixing with some really awful families. i don;t say this lightly as my dh grew up in clifton and his fmaily still live there but even he says he wouldn;t move back there, and lots of the friends he went to school wiht their kids are now older and cause chaos, so my opinion isn;t based on rumors and heresay it is based on experience.

poppleton is my favourite area though and would move there like a shot, its nice stioll got that old fashioned friendly feel to it.

we did look at moving to poppleton or huntington ourselves, as we live in berkshire so what we could get for our money is far more up there than down here. however we are now getting a divorce instead!

lubyluby · 12/12/2007 14:57

there are some younger families in poppleton, i have friend swho live ion poppleton with children aged between 12 and 4 months so can always put you in touch wiht some local freindly faces.

ELR · 12/12/2007 14:58

so these would be closer to leeds? cawood looks nice
as we currently live near a massive town and only 8 miles from london dont know if they would be too small but worth consdering

ELR - I haven't lived in York long and others may be more informed!

Tang Hall's a bit scary, but the houses are really cheap.

Fulford is lovely and the schools are supposedly very good. The areas near the University tend to be more expensive though (Fulford, Heslington, Osbaldwick, etc). I don't know much about the villages further out, sorry. There are some nice houses within easy walking distance of the town centre but most don't have gardens or off-street parking, if that's a concern for you.

Can't think of anything else helpful at the moment!

ELR · 12/12/2007 16:33

thanks everyone obviously want to be in the best area possible for our money, dh has set a limit as wants to be nearly mortgage free so we have extra money if we cant find anything in the pricerange we are looking at but we arent the exravegant type so will be pleased with a nice 3 bed with a garden

I think huntington and fulford secondary were in the Times top 500.

Archbishop Holgates is very good and Osbaldwick is a lovely village in the catchment area. (Although tang hall is kind of close).

Heworth is nice but the secondary for most of it is Burnholme Community College which has many challenges - having said that it does have one of the highest value added in York.

£250k is not actually that much for a house though - not if you are looking at family houses in Poppleton etc (loads for Clifton and Tang Hall though )

ELR · 12/12/2007 17:58

yeah i know but dh has set that limit as would mean we would be almost mortgage free have seen some nice houses online for 225k ect which look nice in fulford and huntington

If you fancied living in a surrounding village, Tockwith (between Wetherby and York) has excellent primary school and older children have choice of King James's in Knaresborough or Tadcaster grammar (not really a grammar school)- both v good. Thriving local community (dance school, cub, scoutrs etc, football every weekend, shop, 2 pubs etc) and a friend of mine is selling her house: £250k...

EmmyLou · 16/12/2007 13:45

Bump

on behalf of friend selling her house with beadnallcopley.net

I have much sympathy with her as we are both trying to sell and buy houses (all within the same village)at the moment. Nothing like a little extra stress at Christmas eh?

scrummyfairyontopofthetree · 16/12/2007 13:54

Hello ELR - I live in a village called Wilberfoss just on the outskirts of York. My husband commutes to Leeds every day (in fact we are Leeds people and my parents still live there).

Our village is lovely as are the surrounding areas, Barmby Moor, Stamford Bridge. Pocklington is a market town a little further along the A1079.

We have a great mums and toddlers, nursery and primary school. For children attending high schools, there are school buses provided.

ArrietyClock · 16/12/2007 14:11

Oh I'm so . It's such a great place to live. Why did I leave??? Oh yes, Dh.....

As others have said, Fulford Comp is supposed to be very good - competition to get in can be steep. I have friends with kids at Huntingdon primary, which they like a lot. If it were me, I'd probably concentrate on those two areas. If I were childfree and not needing schools I might look elsewhere - I like the area around the Knavesmire, but it's probably not great for families as lots of tiny terraces.

Don't know what the housing market is like there now, but at one point if you found somewhere in Fulfords catchment you had to move fast.

Tang Hall isn't as bad as it's cracked up to be, but not somewhere I would chose if there were alternatives. Heworth is very nice and I believe the primary school is fine but moving on to a comp might be tricky. I know kids who went from there to Huntingdon comp, but that was some years ago. The other school would be Burnholme CC which as someone has said, has it's challenges, but I believe rises to them! Burnholme is OK - half way between Tang Hall and Heworth, both literally (in terms of location) and in terms of 'niceness'. Clifton is not great, and personally I find the new estates a bit souless.

I used to know some people who lived in Poppleton. They have 4 kids, so there must be some life there! Nice village and v. close to town, but doesn't have much beyond shop, pub etc.

Areas around Acomb are a real mixed bag. Some fine, some not. For some reason Tang Hall has the reputation, but personally I find some of the areas around Acomb (though not so much 'old' Acomb) quite dismal. Foxwood, for example...

I think villages south and east of York are cheaper than those to the north or certainly used to be.

You will love`it! Lots going on in town, and it may be small, but perfectly formed (if you ask me). Oh except for the traffic. Ring road is hellish (bear it in mind if the commute involves it) but for getting into town the park and rides are very good.

I'll shut up now, shall I and go and be in a corner somewhere....?
