Do I have to buy kitchen paint?
Sounds silly perhaps but I prefer the mat look or will that flake in a steamy kitchen?

Kitchen paints I think handle moisture and steam a lot better than normal paint.
We used a matte kitchen paint and never had any bother.
If it makes an actual difference or not I'm not 100%

We’ve just painted our kitchen in Dulux Kitchen Paint and it’s definitely matt, just more resistant to moisture and is scrubbable.

Most manufacturers will say on their websites which paints are suitable for kitchens/bathrooms. Also, apply then strictly to the instructions. If you stick to that, you should be fine.
You can even get mold-resistant ones.
A standard matt emulsion is likely to be unsuitable, as you can't easily clean it; if your kitchen is steamy it's not just damp, it's fat which will build up on ceilings and walls, especially close to the hob.
I generally go for eggshell for the ceiling, it's easy to clean, but has a slight sheen. Walls, eggshell, or if there's a hood for the hob and the kitchen isn't steamy, one of the specially designed matt paints.

If it's very steamy, a cooker hood, or a fan, would be a good idea anyway, if possible.
