Thermostat not "talking to" boiler

Hi all,

I bought my first home over the summer and tested the heating when I first moved in. Bingo. Toasty and warm.

Didn't think about it again until this week when I went to switch the heating on for winter and it just wouldn't play ball. I've spent days playing with the timed programmes, but noticed today that the thermostat claims to have turned the heating on, even while my radiators stay resolutely off.

I had a smart meter fitted a few weeks ago and the engineer switched everything off, so all I can think is that he somehow disrupted the link between thermostat and boiler. Anyone have any bright ideas for getting it back? I've tried the one trick I have for these things (turning it off and on).

Thanks!

Are the radiator thermostats turned down/off?

Does the thermostat have a separate battery? Our does so won’t communicate with the boiler if the battery goes. Ours also has buttons under the flap on the thermostat that we can press to reset so it talks to the boiler.

Have you googled the boiler make/model for the instruction manual?

I second a battery check - our system wasn’t working last year and we thought the worst. However, the little panel in the wall just needed a new battery Blush

Had to change the batteries in mine yesterday now the timer is decked up so need to programme it. Fitted last year so need to find the instructions

TheMerryWidow1 · 24/10/2021 19:06

After changing batteries on mine, sometimes I need to have it near to boiler to re sync it. I would also get the manual on line

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/10/2021 19:08

Look up the thermostat instructions as well.

It could be set to tell the boiler to come on when it reaches 5C, so the boiler knows, but doesn't 'need' to come on.

Do you have hot water still? It could also be that the boiler is set to just do hot water, not hot water and heating.

I say battery. Mine does this when it is low, but doesn't tell me the battery is low.

If the timer/clock is going round then the batteries are OK.
Our boiler has a knob (under a flap) which you turn for
summer (hot water only)
winter (radiators and hot water)
off (nothing)
R (reset)
If you have something similar try turning it to Reset.

The engineer shouldn’t have left you like that. Call the energy company.

I knew you guys would have the answer, HUGE thanks!

For any other idiot with the same issue, my boiler was set to hot water only.

I grew up in the subtropics and I'm sure I'll have to live here for another ten years before the Mysteries of the Boiler reveal themselves to me 🤣
