Painting stained wood bannister white

Hello, I have stained wood bannisters in an awful orangey wood colour! I want to paint the spindles and the newel post white. Does anyone know what prep I need to for this please? I'd like to paint them just in brilliant white satin coat. Guessing I'd need to sand, but there's no shine or varnish on them at the moment that I can see, just wood stain. Any advice needed, now I've got it in my head, I want to get on with it! Thanks.

You may need to apply domething like Zinisser stain blocker/primer first.

We once painted a door that had been previously stained and the stain seeped through and the white paint went yellowy.

Oh, thank you. I hadn't thought of that.

Dulux quick drying eggshell worked without a primer on my mother's staircase.

Absolutely the stain blocker - zinsser BIN. I painted stained panelling in my old bathroom without doing this and it went yellow within a couple of weeks. I was three attempts down before asking on a DIY board, had to strip the whole lot back and start again.
