Help me find a mantel mirror please

I'm looking for a mantelpiece mirror for our new home. It's Edwardian and still has all its period features, so I'd like something traditional. I like the style of the attached from Anthropologie, but not so much the price tag. Can anyone help me source a cheaper one?

I got one on eBay for about £100 a few years ago - not quite as nice as that one but similar style. It's exactly the kind of thing that comes up if you can wait for the right one in the right location for you.

@oriel3 I agree with @Zinnia Ebay is your best bet. Try different search titles ‘antique mantel mirror’ or ‘Edwardian mantel mirror’ etc. The mirror you’ve referenced from Anthropologie is lovely, but IMO the height of it level next to the very tall cupboards will draw the room upwards which may have the effect of making your room seem smaller and narrower than it is if it is positioned near a wall as shown in the image IYSWIM?. A similar shape but smaller mirror may be better (and kinder on your pocket) so have a look at the usual suspects - Graham&Green, Rocket StGeorge etc. I’d consider the fixings also for a mirror the size of the Anthropologie one - they’d need to be rock solid. What is the fireplace like in the house you’ve bought? Maybe post a pic here so we can make suggestions? Congratulations on the new house btw!

Secondhand is probably your best bet for this. Antiques fairs, eBay possibly even gumtree etc. Beautiful style!

Overmantel mirror

Isseywith3witchycats · 24/10/2021 13:13

try your local auction house too my daughter runs one with her partner and they get mirrors in all the time and they go for reasonable prices

oriel3 · 24/10/2021 13:14

Thank you - I've found a John Lewis one that seems nice for £200. We've always had a rectangular mirror above the mantel, but I fancy a change and like these ones that sit on top of the mantel.

Omg thank you so much, I like this one a lot theonlinemirrorshop.com/product/osborne-white-overmantle-mirror/

Unrelated - it's 'mantel', not 'mantle'. I think both used to be legitimate spellings, a long time ago, and Americans still think the latter is fine. But 'mantle' means cloak!

I'm not having a go at posters btw! Just the internet

I was just going to suggest John Lewis, but you already got there!

oriel3 · 24/10/2021 13:44

This is the John Lewis one I liked. A bit more special than the other one I linked?

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-overmantle-bow-mirror-97-5-x-105cm-white/p5045310?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Try Ebay

londonmummy1966 · 24/10/2021 13:48

There are loads on ebay at the moment for far far less than the Anthropologie one. Type in Victorian Overmantle mirror and set search to nearest first - as not everyone will courier a mirror. You can always paint it a different colour if it isn't quite what you wanted.

The one thing I would say is if you have high ceilings don't buy one that is too small as it can look a bit squitty.

How about this one? Looks like it comes in white too.

eBay is a good shout but not so easy as we don't have a car....

We bought a similar mirror size and shape wise, but quite plain for £20 from marketplace. There’s a lot on there. It might take you a while to find what you need, if you’re in no hurry it might be worth just keeping a daily check on what comes up available 😊

PigletJohn · 24/10/2021 14:55

An oblique point

is the fireplace a functional one, and is it ever lit?

In the days of open fires, an overmantel mirror was greatly deprecated, because people are liable to stand close looking in it while they arrange their hair or makeup, resulting in their dresses catching fire and horrible burns.

oriel3 · 24/10/2021 15:45

Haha thanks Piglet John for that. It's functional but we don't intend to avail of it.

We found ours in an antiques shop locally, it’s a sort of cheap antiques shop rather than a fancy one if you see what I mean? They had loads and the owner said they always have all sorts of mirrors all the time. I couldn’t bear to part with hundreds of pounds for a mirror tbh so we trawled all the cheap shops (b&m etc) and we’re quite impressed with the offerings in the range although none were quite the right size and style. Then we went to the flea markets and antiques and found something totally different that we loved even more.

Itsmemaggie · 24/10/2021 16:03

Zara home has a nice one www.zarahome.com/gb/gold-wooden-mirror-l42377106

I think it may come in different sizes.

On another note I recently spray painted a mirror that was a nice shape but an odd shade and it was really easy.

oriel3 · 24/10/2021 18:33

The thing with flea markets and secondhand shops is that we don't have a car so are really constrained. So it's going to have to be a delivery.

We don't have scar either @oriel3 - but I did drive a car club one halfway across London to pick up my mirror (interesting time getting it in the back of a hatchback..).
Failing that there are loads of companies who will transport stuff for you, try Shipley.
