Hi everyone, I'm just collecting removal quotes at the moment and trying to pick my preferred firm. I've had two quotes back so far (one local, one national) and both expect full payment upfront at time of booking - is that standard practice please?

Mine has taken card details and payment will be taken the day of. Local company.

I have used removal companies in a previous area before and they took payment before.

onedream · 22/10/2021 20:28

Ours took £100 upfront to secure the date and rest on the morning of moving day.

HouseIsOnFire · 22/10/2021 20:37

Just seems like a lot (long distance move so £2500) to pay up front! Worried that of my buyer pulled out, I'd be stuffed!

But then maybe I need to ask for not-same-day exchange for that reason!

We didn’t pay anything upfront when we moved from Surrey to Leeds in May.

HouseIsOnFire · 22/10/2021 21:01

Thank you, maybe I need to ask a couple nore firms! Who did you use please @warmduscher?

We used Aspen Movers, who are based in Weybridge.

HouseIsOnFire · 22/10/2021 21:22

Thank you, also moving up north so was hoping they'd be the other end!!!

Ours were really good - asked us to narrow it down to a two week period, then we paid a deposit for the day and then paid afterwards. No way I would pay £2500 up front if you haven't exchanged yet!

maofteens · 22/10/2021 21:29

I believe I did pay in advance (it was only in August but honestly can't remember). There must be something in the contract if the completion day is moved.

Warmduscher · 22/10/2021 22:10

We were lucky that we’d already bought the house and could decide the date we moved, within reason.

HouseIsOnFire · 22/10/2021 22:15

I'm moving in with family and sending my stuff to storage, so can be quite flexible. I'll ask about splitting completion and exchange- hopefully my buyers are OK with that, they're first time buyers so not much to organise hopefully???

Yes it's normal. It also guarantees they will turn up to do your move.
What if a company didn't charge in advance and chose to book in a more lucrative job instead?
All removal firms asking for full payment should offer a cancellation/postponement waiver as an optional part of their insurance.

BurgerOnTheOrientExpress · 18/01/2022 10:35

Pay using a credit card, then you will be covered if they default. If they only accept bank transfer , ask if they will allow your solicitor dealing with the conveyance to hold the payment. If they only accept cash think again.

Where are you moving from OP? If it’s near me I know a great local firm

darlingdodo · 04/04/2022 17:27

We had our stuff in storage (with the removal company) so had already paid for uplift and storage. If you're staying with family, it might be a good idea to book removal for day after completion, then you can be certain your vendors will have moved and there's no hanging around waiting for keys.........

We paid by card as soon as the furniture was in the new house.

TatianaBis · 04/04/2022 18:25

No we've always paid 50% upfront and the balance after the move.

If it's a long distance move try Simon Jones or Cavendish and Country.

If you're concerned someone may pull out, how far in advance do they insist on payment?
