Chimney Lining Cost

Sweep said our chimney failed the smoke test and we will have to get it lined. We've had an estimate of £2000 which I just don't have right now, but we were about to put a new gas coal fire in so either that will have to wait or I'll have to beg borrow and steal...

A bloke on the phone reckoned £900 but that was not based on actual dimensions.

3 story (top floor is loft conversion) Edwardian semi. Has anyone done one recently for me to get a comparable cost?

SW London...

I had this done well outside London and over eight years ago. The lining was one thing but they needed a scaffolding tower to reach the top of the chimney and I was just two storeys - they might use a cherry picker to do yours. I was putting in wood burning stoves - I'm not sure of what you need for a gas fire. Have you asked the gas fire people who or what they recommend? I can't find my original invoice, but I think I paid around £2000 for two chimneys to be lined.

We have a wood burner installed about eight years ago in a chalet bungalow and they remove old fireplace, built new chimney breast, put in metal liner, surrounded with micrafil (I think that was what it was called) and the whole price including the stove was about £3,200.

Gas liners are cheaper than solid fuel ones

The parts don’t cost a lot , it’s the fitting that is the expensive bit.
