I'm no electrician but...

An electric socket under the sink? This was moved during kitchen installation as apparently they have to be accessible. It was on the wall behind the washing machine before the reno.

Surely this is a potential hazard where it is now- under the sink drainage unit?

I had one under sink (for dishwasher) in my old kitchen (added in 2003 when we rejigged the kitchen).
Now have one in the sink cupboard, although it is a corner cupboard and the double socket is in the corner side so not under the sink, in my new kitchen (fitted 2019).

Don't think it's unusual. We have one under our sink for dishwasher. New build.

TheCanyon · 22/10/2021 19:03

All the houses round here are the same, we actually had a leak in one of the pipes and it flooded

1990s · 22/10/2021 19:03

Standard.

GuckGuckDoose · 22/10/2021 19:04

Not unusual I don’t think. We also had one under sink for boiling water tap.

Thanks for all the replies!! Sounds like it is normal then. It still looks weird to me... we seem to have regular plumbing leaks in every house we've lived in so possibly overly cautious.

Thanks all Smile

I did ask about it when we had ours redone, but they were like that before too.

Apparently under sink leaks are rare, if they do happen the leak will be from the bottom of the pipe and will drip straight down cos gravity and not run down the side over the socket.

Also an up to date electrical system means the circuit would trip.

Does seem super weird when you think about the bathroom rules about how far away things have to be. But apparently that is about “splashing”.

tiggerwhocamefortea · 22/10/2021 19:23

It's not normal no - best practice would be a fused spur on the wall behind the back of the cabinet

Felyne · 22/10/2021 19:38

We had this at our old house too, after the kitchen was replaced. Electrician signed off and certified their work.
It seems silly to me to do it like this.

PigletJohn · 22/10/2021 21:02

It is not forbidden, but I believe it can be done better.

BlueMongoose · 22/10/2021 21:11

Personally I wouldn't tolerate it, legal or not.

maofteens · 22/10/2021 21:21

Yes I had this in my last house which I redid the kitchen (about ten years ago). The dishwasher socket was under the sink. Had no issues. Even if there had been a leak it wouldn't have reached the socket, and if it did I'm sure it would have just tripped the fuse.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/10/2021 11:13

We have one but it is located much higher up. If ours was like that I would have it repositioned or replaced with an 'outdoor type' that is waterproof. Screwfix fo them for £9.99.

Can get a waterproof cover if worrd
