Bath- Where is best to live?

Hello,

My partner has been offered a job in Bath at RUBH and we are hoping to move there next year, following the sale of our house. We have a 2 year old son, so would need to be close to a good primary school.

Our priorities are, in order:

  1. Schooling- this is very important to us (which primary schools are the most desirable? We're willing to compromise on most things if it gets our son into a good school)
  2. Location of house (safe middle class area with some local amenities near)
  3. Preferably a Georgian property

We are willing to compromise on number 3 if needed, as we're aware that these tend to come with a price tag attached.

Our budget is £850k.

I would also be curious to know if there are any areas around Bath that would be worth directing our attention to as we are new to the area.

TIA to anyone who is able to help direct our efforts.

If your DH is working at the ruh then it makes sense to base yourself
In Weston. A safe family area with the desirable WASPS school.

Ah thank you so much for your response. It’s really appreciated. We have been researching a few areas. Could you provide any information on:

  • Bear Flat
  • Widcombe
  • Camden
  • Bathampton

Partner was looking to get an electric bike to make his way from A to B.

My recommendation if your DH want to commute by bicycle would be to look at Saltford which is between Bristol and Bath. From Saltford you have easy access to the Bristol to Bath cycle path. There is a very good primary school there too.

Also have a look at Keynsham. It's midway between Bristol and Bath. It also has a railway station (which Saltford doesn't) which means its only 10 minutes by train to either city.

All the places you mention are very nice.

Widcombe has a fab little high street and is still very close to town proper. The primary school is excellent.

Bear flat is full of down from Londoners. Easy walk into town. Children would probably get into widcombe school.

Bathhampton is a friendly village and it’s easy to cycle along the canal into town. The village primary school is well regarded.

Camden. Close to town, lovely views. Children would probably go to st Stephens which is well regarded.

Thank you so much for that information. It can be rather daunting moving to a new location and all that information is unbelievably helpful in order to continue our search.

Hi 👋 I’m back again.

Can anyone tell me anything about Freshford and the primary there? I know it’s a little further out.

TIA

Hello. Kids start at KES Senior school in bath in September. Looking at a rental in Colerne. How's the commute? Don't want to spend all day in traffic. Thanks so much

If Colerne is on the same side of the city as KES or there is a route to get there that avoids the city centre then you should be fine.
DH used to commute to Bath via Box Hill every day and it was OK if you allow enough time. But that was a few years ago now so may be out of date.
