Anyone else had a new bathroom quote in last few months?

We received our quite today for a new bathroom: £13.5k! (Suffolk.) It's a small bathroom but needs everything changed: new floor, tiles, everything. It's terrible at the moment. What they have quoted for looks amazing, but still feels pretty steep. Or is it?!

I'll be honest, I was hoping it would be more like £8k but from what I've heard, prices and demand have sky rocketed recently. I've called around a few other companies but a lot can't even come out to measure until December and we need it completed by March (baby due and only one bathroom!)

Has anyone used a service such as Victoria Plum? Is it a nightmare having things delivered and then using a separate fitter?

We want a good job but equally don't want to feel ripped off. What's standard these days? Thanks!

I've had the old bathroom ripped out, walls plastered, floor and walls tiled, and new suite fitted, all for just over 5k. I'm in the Midlands.

Fagin99 · 20/10/2021 20:23

Thanks Bluebiscuits. Was that recently and may I ask if it was with a local or national company? Thanks!

Who gave you the quote? It is steep. Does it mean that supplier also fits it or something? Is that what drives the premium? I hired a builder to fit it, and bought bathroom products separately. 5k in total, done in 2020.

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 20/10/2021 20:33

Do not go to Victoria plum. Terrible company.. read their reviews, I had nothing but trouble from them.

Your quote seems a lot.

7 months ago I paid 10k for:
Everything ripped out
Pluming was wrong so fixed
One wall had to be pulled down and rebuilt
New floor
Lights
Ceiling
Plastered
Walk in shower
New pump system going into the ceiling
Moved the sink - New sink and new toilet
Tiling

Shower pump and fittings were top of the range. Toilet, sink and tiles midrange.

Blind fitted, light switch moved to outside, mirror fitted, New radiator with working for it moved. Cabinets put up on the wall.

London

I bought a bathroom suite from Victorian plumbing for £750 (cheapest suite) and paid £2300 for two guys to fit it including a small amount of tiling, plastering ceiling, painting and new floor, though it is a small bathroom and I got rid of the old suite myself.
I would expect to pay £5k for the same in a bigger bathroom with more tiling and a nicer suite which is what I assume you'd be getting.

If you order it yourself, I'd really recommend Drench. They delivered on time (Victorian Plumbing was delay after delay, although this was Sept 2020 so still covid delays - but they didn't contact me to tell me the dates changed, I had to keep logging in and checking). Drench's exchange service was straightforward too (I decided to swap the shower tray for a slightly smaller one).

Bluebiscuits · 20/10/2021 20:43

Fagin99 yes it was this month. I found an independent plumber, who suggested a tiler and plasterer, and they all coordinated with each other, and I paid each separately.

ScoopyDoo · 20/10/2021 20:44

It’s definitely not difficult to source your own products and get a fitter. I used Victorian plumbing for loo and shower base, other companies for vanity unit and matching cupboard. Plumb world are good value and great service, shower and radiator came from there. Tile and taps from local showrooms because I wanted to see them. Got 5 quotes for fitting and chose the chap I was happiest with. He was also the most expensive but did a cracking job. All in about £8k two years ago, south west. It will vary by geography, room size, spec etc but in my experience it’s always cheaper doing things that way than an all-in-one service.

I’m in East Mids I had mine done earlier this year for £7k, roughly a 50/50 split in labour and materials. Mine was completely gutted and had a fair amount of relocating pipework.

I bought almost everything separately, from various websites. I used Heat and Plumb and Plumbworld a lot, got some really good deals from there. Just make sure to order well in advance, so you have time to return/exchange them should you need to.

I did get a couple of things from a local supplier, such as tiles and shower enclosure (things I couldn’t easily open to inspect, or pick up an alternative on the day if there were any issues, basically).

The builder bought the smaller things like adhesive, plumbing bits.

In march I had a new bathroom installed downstairs. It involved extending downstairs WC out into part of the utility to make room bigger, blocking up existing doorway to utility and putting new one in, installing plumbing for radiator, shower, bath taps and WC (plumbing already there but needed moving), full tiling of bathroom in metro tiles, new floor laid, a window cut into external wall and fitted as well as new lighting and ceiling plastered. Including fixtures it cost about £9k. We are in South East. It took approx 3 weeks to complete

Justwingingit2005 · 20/10/2021 20:54

We paid 6 6 months ago that was for everything ripped out even floorboards and pipes and replaced. Tiling, suite, flooring etc.
laWe had several quotes from 5k up to 10k for the same suite and same tiles. One bloke wanted 900 quid a day labour, when my face dropped he said well I do 7 hr days Confused

jellybean88 · 20/10/2021 20:56

Live in essex and we have had one quote for 11.5k and another for 8k. Going to get a couple more before we decide

onemouseplace · 20/10/2021 20:57

We got a couple of quotes for a bathroom refit that came in similarly around £4-5k for labour, but didn’t include fixtures/ suite etc.

CharlotteRose90 · 20/10/2021 20:57

We had ours done a few months ago. I’m in Cheshire and Manchester. Everything ripped out and down to the brick etc. Paid just over £6 and it looks perfect.

Happyorchidlady · 20/10/2021 21:00

Just had ours done. Just under £7000 all in but that included relocating the pipe work, lovely tiles and a mirror that cost £500 on its own!

maofteens · 20/10/2021 22:38

I've just had mine done. I paid £1200 from Bathroom Mountain for the sanitary ware and taps/waste etc, £100 for heated towel rail, £350 for tiles, and about £5000 for the bathroom to be ripped out, floor levelled, replastering, new wiring for light and illuminated mirror, tiling and painting. SW London. I sourced the materials and have builders who subcontracted the tiling, plastering etc. So about £6500 all in.
About 15 years ago I had a quote for £10k just to redo a shower - just that, a shower, not including materials! Total rip off.

Fagin99 · 21/10/2021 18:17

Thank you so much everyone for sharing your experiences! I'm definitely going to go back to the drawing board. There are a few local fitters with excellent reviews, I reckon I could save at least £4k by sourcing items myself. Thank you again - you have inspired me! Smile

We got all of our stuff from Plumbworld which was great, good prices and seems (!) solid. You will save money if you do the rip out yourself.

pinksparkly · 22/10/2021 14:20

Another vote for Plumbworld, we got everything from there, customer service is excellent and delivery is great. They even have interest free credit if you want to spread the payments!!

@DuvetDayIsEveryDay would you mind sharing the contacts of your contractors? Are you happy with their work?
Simonutti72 · 22/11/2021 11:20

Drench were good suppliers - we also used Lusso stone for some nice taps & basin
