Could I wallpaper paste a map to a wall?

My decoration skills are limited to a decent bit of painting - I've never done anything with wall paper! We had a large map bluetacked to the wall in the kitchen because we knew we would repaint soon - we have repainted and have put up some tasteful framed prints , but we miss the map - the kids were getting good at countries and it distracted them from explaining how disgusting the dinner is. But blue tacking the map up would look shabby, I can't find a framed map that is the same and has flags at the bottom - so could I paste it too the wall? Or any clever map mounting ideas?

Could you get your map framed? You could stick it to the wall, but that would be permanent so when you redecorate it would disappear. (Unless you're not planning on re-painting until your children have left home so that wouldn't matter)

You're reminding me of a scene from We Need to Talk About Kevin!

What about magnetic rails?

I have a map and another print displayed using those but neither is thin paper- one is thin card and one is a magnetic vinyl map. Not sure if the bottom rail would be too heavy for a paper print.....

The previous owners of my house had some kind of world map mural pasted to the wall - look online for wallpaper murals.

I can't stand it, so it's going!

I was just thinking that!

Maybe you could get some thin stripwood and glue or staple it along the top and bottom to keep the map stiff, then pin/fix a cord to the top at each end and hang the map from a hook?
The old way with posters back in the day (Athene, anyone?) was a sort of plastic strip you could slide along top and bottom, with a cord through the top one to hang it from. There seem to still be some about, like this, though you might need a bigger one: www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Poster-Hanger-Inch-Posters/dp/B002MXPKKI/ref=asc_df_B002MXPKKI/?hvlocphy=9046592&hvlocphy=9046592&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvnetw=g&hvadid=375434312298&hvadid=375434312298&hvpone&hvpone&hvlocint&hvlocint&ref&hvpos&hvpos&hvdev=c&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-833978847572&hvtargid=pla-833978847572&hvrand=3384037935276545382&hvrand=3384037935276545382&adgrpid=77211061112

I am sure you can do it OP, watch some YouTube videos and just buy an extra roll of paper in case you make a mistake. Paste the wall type of wallpaper is easier than paste the paper IMHO.

Sewaccidentprone · 20/10/2021 17:28

Screw fix do a spray glue which would probably work and be easier to apply and stick.

SavoyCabbage · 20/10/2021 17:39

How big is the map?

BestZebbie · 20/10/2021 17:50

Those slide-in plastic tubes top and bottom (poster hangers) and a picture hook?

DuneFan · 20/10/2021 17:54

The previous owners of my house did this. We can't get the map off and can't paint over it so at some point we will have to scrape it off and get the wall replastered.

Basically, be sure that you want it for the long term!

doradoo · 20/10/2021 17:56

We have a large map that we pasted onto a piece of plywood and then hung that on the wall.

Thighdentitycrisis · 20/10/2021 18:02

I would paper the map to the wall, then buy some beading, cut to size (mitre the corners) and no more nails it around the map to look like a frame

Yes!

We have an ordnance survey map on the wall of our downstairs loo, trimmed off the covers and pasted on with wallpaper paste. Just take care not to smooth over with a sponge like you would ordinary wallpaper as it spoils the surface.

Mumdiva99 · 20/10/2021 19:16

Bit off the subject.but our map is currently in the utility room.....before we moved I had one in the living room on the door....then we moved and I got a new map....but itnwas free from the daily mail - I can't remember how I acquired it and I dare not put it where someone would see it and think I read the daily mail!!! But it has flags and capital cities, population and area too.

PoetryLaser · 20/10/2021 19:30

I glued all my music posters to my bedroom wall with wallpaper paste in the 1980s. They're still there, under my mum's preferred magnolia paint which went up the very day I moved out!

PoetryLaser · 20/10/2021 19:32

If you go ahead, the main thing will be to get it perfectly straight or it will annoy you every day! Another idea would be to put some cork tiles on the wall behind the map, so you could pin it on, and change the posters as the kids' interests change.
I believe you can also buy magnetic paint to create a magnetic pin board but i don't know how strong the magnetism is.

Underthestairsbears · 20/10/2021 19:38

You can get world maps as wall stickers/wall murals.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 20/10/2021 19:57

Command picture strips would also work as they are for posters.
