Hello all,

I'm measuring up for curtains for the first time and I need help. Can any of you lovely lot please give advice? I'm NC with my mother sadly or else I would have asked her.

Attached two pics of doors in our cold Victorian house (just bought it, lots to do).

One is the front door and my husband has put a curtain pole up full width across the vestibule , but the curtain doesn't have to be pulled over the whole wall.

The second is an internal door at the back of the house. It leads from kitchen to a sort of cold back hallway / utility space - concrete floor. There is an external door with cat flap in , and my husband didn't want to put a cat flap in the internal door to the kitchen (it's a nice Victorian one), so we settled on a thermal curtain that the cat should hopefully be able to nose around.

Hi,

So we finally installed both the poles and tested the drop with a curtain. Here are the sizes in inches:

Back hall:
Drop = 88” (from very top edge of curtain to floor)
width of curtain pole (inside the brackets) = 49”

Front door
Drop = 105” (from very top edge of curtain to floor)
width: 75” (the curtain pole is wall to wall, it could be a bit narrower and still cover the door

The width of the front door from the outer edges of the architrave is 44.5”

I have a budget of about £400 for both curtains including alterations - I want lined heavy ones , so I've been looking on eBay. There's a lady in our village who can alter curtains very cheaply.

Would any of these work do you think:
For front door with panel added to add length ?

For the back door?

Or maybe buy this pair and have them altered as needed?

I'm confused about how much width I actually need for a decent gather / fullness.

If anybody has any other suggestions please let me know!

Thanks so much 🙃

In case it matters, the front vestibule is getting redecorated, wallpaper removed and it's been painted a sort of terracotta red colour

There are lots of websites to help you decide what size curtains you need, e.g. www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/blogs/curtains-buying-guide/ready-made-curtain-buying-guide. Good luck!

Usually for fullness you would have at least the width x half again. I think that would be plenty for doors. If these are temporary it might be worth looking around charity shops and your lady could join 3 pairs into 2?

Also try places like Dunelm Mill and their off the shelf curtains. Come in a range of sizes and relatively cheap.

& check charity shops - it might be worth while to go to nearest "middle class" town they tend to have previously more expensive goods
