Interior doors....what style looks good?

We live in a 1930s house that has been completely modernised and extended inside, so no original features at all.

But the interior doors are ghastly - those moulded lightweight faux-Victorian six panel doors. None of the door-handles match, and several of them don't close properly, drag on the carpet, have wobbly hinges, dents and damage - they have all got to go. But what style to replace them with??

I quite like the look of oak doors, but we currently have wood floors downstairs (not oak, but a similar colour) and all our woodwork is white. Would this look odd?

I prefer clean/contemporary, no twiddly details, but I reckon totally flat doors are probably a bit too 1970s/80s. Any suggestions as to a nice style that won't date too quickly?

Any recommendations for a company that can supply and fit (we are in Surrey)?

I'm not sure about the oak, but my parents got some gorgeous 1930s doors from a rec yard - they're all a bit mis matched but the do look great.

I don't think there's a lot of point in going for reclamations, as there are literally no remaining 1930s features.

I’ve got a 30s house with a modern interior, waxed white floor boards, white walls and woodwork with light oak shaker doors.

Some of the doors have a frosted glass panel instead of wood, for a bit of variety and to keep it light and airy. They’re very plain but not boring if that makes sense.

I like them and think they suit the place.

When I say shaker door, I mean there’s only 1 panel inside the frame. I think you can get them with several.

As there are no 30s features then put whatever modern doors you like. I think it would look odd to try and get 30s doors now.

My last house was 1930s and when it had been done up in the 1980s they'd added those 6 panel doors as well, god knows why they're so popular because they're also in the 1990s house we're currently in and I can't wait to get rid of them. When we remodelled we still went modern with handle-less kitchen and wooden floors etc.but put 1 over 3 original style doors back in. I think they suit the proportions of the rooms well and just generally go with the bones of the house IYSWIM. We didn't reinstate any other period type features.

We bought these ones and oiled them...

Thanks @SollaSollew . I was debating going for the 30s style 1 over 3 doors, but contemporary. Just want nice, heavy doors that actually close properly and aren't falling off their hinges! Do you feel your oiled wood doors blended OK with wooden floors/white woodwork?

I have heard good things about Todds. I do need someone to fit them, though.

@Telegram - nice idea about throwing in a few glazed ones.

I have ply as a bit of a theme ( my kitchen is ply too ) and have ply doors throughout now . Some with glass too. It's very sleek but it's paintable if the next home owners aren't so keen .

Hi @CointreauVersial. We did the floors after we did the doors so we were able to choose something that had the same kind of tones (oak) which helped. I would recommend Todd doors, they have a showroom in Twickenham now (not sure how useful that would be to you!) but it helped me to go and see them. We used polyox raw oil on the doors to keep the natural colour.

I’ve attached a picture to show you as it’s probably easier than me trying to explain! This was when the floors had just been laid.

Ahh, yes, they do go beautifully. Our floor is a bit paler/more yellow than oak. I think it will work, but DH not convinced!

My current aversion to white doors is probably because, not only are they foul polystyrene-packed moulded doors, they have also been painted eggshell, which picks up aaaalllll the grubby fingerprints.

I second the Todd doors recommendation, nice quality doors - also they were the only place that did Victorian replica doors that actually looked and felt like our original ones. We opted for fire doors throughout as we liked the extra weight.

In your shoes I’d go for 30s one over three style but in white. I think wood doors would look odd if your skirting and architraves are white. Personal choice though. I notice Solla has white handles on her wood doors which helps them tie in.

A good joiner should be able to fit doors and advise on what sizes to order to fit your openings.

It’s worth checking if the openings are reasonably square first - you don’t want to order new doors only to shave them into a weird polygon shape to fit a wonky opening.

SollaSollew · 19/10/2021 11:15

You know I didn't even think of that @minipie! A lot of our skirting/architrave was painted the same colour as the walls too so maybe I didn't notice. Anyway that's something worth thinking about when I replace the doors in my new house. Thanks.
