Hand painting kitchen units vs professional spray

Has anyone done either option? Would you recommend? If you DIY was it a nightmare?

I'm in the process of buying a house with a very large, old, pine kitchen. I haven't had a good look at it but I'm hopeful it can be given a face-lift whilst we do the rest of the house.

I've seen quotes around £1k for a respray, has anyone had one done for that or does it sound too cheap?

@Thetrainisinthestation I'd be interested to know roughly how much it cost to have a kitchen resprayed by that company, if you wouldn't mind sharing?

My kitchen is white high gloss but quite old. The outer layer split on the dishwasher door and we couldn’t get a replacement so we stripped the plastic layer off and took it to a car body spray shop - they charged £40 and it’s a beautiful finish.

We hand painted our kitchen cupboards, twice? First time with chalk paint - don't do that, as PP said every oily mark shows up!
Second time with Wilkinson's kitchen cupboard paint. Much easier, looks great. Not perfect but we're not perfectionists.

To the people who painted their cupboards by themselves- how do you paint over the sort of vinyl cupboards iykwim?
Did you have to use primer first?
What kind of paint afterwards?
How many coats did you need?

I'm absolutely lost, our cupboards looks terrible.

Thanks all, lots of food for thought, and the two posted look fab!

They are shaker style so I definitely wouldn't attempt to vinyl wrap them.. I am leaning towards getting the professionals in! There is a LOT of pine to go at in this house, so I might try out my skills on another part of the house Grin

We got an easyJet engineer in to respray our cupboards .... (only kidding, but that's what it looks like to me ) ... Hubbie wanted "something different" .... I'm just bidding my time til I can get it re-done....

@RosieRoww no primer. Just the V33 paint. I removed doors and sugar soaked them, lightly sanded then 2 coats of paint with a good few hours drying time in between

I was helping the sister in law get prices for a new kitchen recently, I was shocked at the price of kitchen doors from B&Q, Wren and other.
I managed to get her some other lower prices but then she found a company that will come and remove all the door, drawer fronts and kick boards, sand them down, paint them and return them and paint any bits that could not be removed.
I was not to sure about it as it was not something i had thought of before, but i went with her to have a look around the place and was impressed with the finish, having only last year purchased new bathroom furniture, this kitchen respray they do was multiple times better quality.
The company she used was called Gallant Restoration in Lincolnshire, they travel all over doing this and the price was about 5th of a new kitchen and without all the mess
