Converting loo/coal house to an adjoined utility

Hi all - I live in a 1930s terrace, which my husband and I are modernising. There is a standard tiny galley kitchen which we are going to knock through to the reception room to create a spacious kitchen diner. We’ve decided not to extend as the costs at the moment are atrocious and not sure we’d gain that value back (and actually the existing space would be more than adequate for what we need). The only thing we do want a find a way to include is a small utility area.

We have a 1930s loo / outhouse that adjoins to the kitchen (the toilet installed is relatively modern and works, but otherwise the space is quite grim). We are thinking about converting that into a utility (or knocking it and rebuilding a small square structure that is a bit bigger than the current rectangular structure (and could accommodate a loo as well as utilities).

Wondered if anyone else has done this? Would it need planning permission? Any idea of cost (we’re in outer London)?

To clarify OP, is the outhouse completely detached from your house, or attached but with a door only from the outside?

Hi @Daisydoesnt - the second, it is attached to the kitchen but can only be accessed from the outside. I’d want to enter from the kitchen / inside.

Is it single brick? If it is it is not classed as a habitable space.
