First things for unfurnished home

Hi all,

I've started a few threads recently regarding property searching, viewings & shared ownership. Have now had a few viewings and am looking at the practicalities and costs of moving and have another question!

What are the most important things/first things to get when moving into an unfurnished flat. Have a newborn so want to be reasonable with spending. Not strapped for cash but not looking at getting all furnishings at once. So basically what I would NEED.

I have a bed & mattress that is new and I'd be taking with me & the home will come with fitted kitchen. But aside from that where do you start?

Sofa? Table & chairs?

Table, chairs and yes, sofa.

I guess some versatile storage furniture would be good to start with... Bookcases, drawer units. But yes, I'd start with the sofa and dining table.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 16/10/2021 13:24

Absolutely. Places to sit and eat are primary.

MajorNeville · 16/10/2021 13:32

Other than seating and a table, I'd say a wardrobe or drawers, somewhere for clothes storage.

Don’t forget the little things. A Toilet brush is top of my list these days.

ReeseWitherfork · 16/10/2021 14:56

Oooo don't start the toilet brush debate 😂 but that's a good angle to think of actually... Not furniture, but a kettle is a priority!

Cooking trays, utensils, crockery
Curtains/blinds?
Clothes storage
Washing machine/tumble dryer?
Rugs if you have bare floorboards

My parents moved into their first time with a double bed, a cot, two arm chairs,a nursing chair, a melamine coffee table and a cooker.
Oh, and 12 trays, from the days before wedding present lists were a thing!

First time = first home

I’d say start with a good door mat because you’ll be trekking in and out loads as you move in and you don’t need to be worrying about knackering the carpet on day 1!

Don't forget about lights!

Gingerkittykat · 16/10/2021 15:18

I would start with window coverings to get some privacy.

Cooking equipment and crockery and cutlery.

A cooker, fridge and washing machine with either an airer or tumble drier to dry your clothes.

I moved from renting a furnished place to my own house with minimal money left over a few years ago. I had lots of crockery, cutlery, towels etc already. I bought curtains right away and have slowly upgraded to blinds. I was lucky enough to get given a coffee table and a dining table and chairs. The house had a built in oven so I just needed a fridge and a washing machine in terms of appliances. I did buy toilet brushes and loo roll holders and after a few weeks I bought a really gorgeous welcome mat.

It takes time to make a house a home, I preferred starting from a minimal place so that I knew I really needed anything I bought to try and cut down on clutter.

table and chairs.
the first weeks in our home after renting we used out camping chairs in the living room.
