What's an "Orangery"?

Well, yes, I know what it is in my world, but I am seeing so much about them recently. Do people just mean a conservatory, but that's become unfashionable?

Is there a material difference?

And can I raise you a "camellia house"?

Isn't it Orangerie?? (Cos it's posher) !!!
Ours was described as a sun lounge. Misnomer- it was an ice box in winter.
Glad to see the back of the waste of space

As an aside, how is orangery pronounced? I always thought it was orange-ry (with a sort of half syllable in between) but a mum at school was talking about her oh-RAN-jerry the other day.

HeronLanyon · 16/10/2021 11:48

Orang-ry is how I say it. Kind of 2.5 syllables. The way I say it has a very slight hidden/half ‘er’ in the middle. It’s not a word I say or hear often !

In a french way, so like the mum I’m afraid.

You can put your Monets in it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/10/2021 14:16

It's a conservatory that enables the owner to have another eighty five grand tagged onto the sale price and a tree in a pot for the estate agent's photos.

butterflyze · 16/10/2021 14:20

@CheltenhamLady That is not an orangery.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/10/2021 14:42
@CheltenhamLady That is not an orangery.
It’s the modern definition of, according to companies like Everest et al.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 16/10/2021 14:51

I think there has to be something growing in an Orangerie, in a brick (or permanent) bed. For preference an orange tree!

otherwise it's a conservatory....things in pots, faintly mildewed, yet sunbleached wicker furnishings.

altforvarmt · 16/10/2021 16:11

loopylindi · 16/10/2021 16:35

What about the flooring? I doubt they are carpeted. The only one I've been in had a grape vine growing through the glazing so the grapes ripened, and it also had a brick floor.

GemmaRuby · 16/10/2021 16:37

See also “garden room” (when you get a solid roof put on your conservatory).

Having an orangery is my dream goddamit. Can’t believe you’re all being mean about them.

yamadori · 16/10/2021 17:02

@Ionlydomassiveones

An orangery is only an orangery if you employ a team of gardeners and you grow bloody oranges in it! Otherwise it’s an extension or a conservatory.
^ This.
Donotgogentle · 16/10/2021 17:04

This one would do me.

butterflyze · 16/10/2021 17:04

@Cattitudes Yes!! That is an orangery all right.

Donotgogentle · 16/10/2021 17:05

@Cattitudes

This is an orangery.
That one would be fine too.
CuteOrangeElephant · 16/10/2021 17:06

In my mind a conservatory is part of the house and an orangerie is more part of the garden.

topcat2014 · 16/10/2021 17:13

Something they sell at Burford Garden Centre that is the size of the ground floor of my semi.

If your house is less than 100 years old it will not suit.
