Ensuite - Bath or no bath?

BigBoxLittleBox · 13/10/2021 19:57

We are renovating our ensuite and currently the plan is to put in a large shower rather than a shower and a bath.

However the ensuite is quite big (3m x 2.5m) and I'm worried it might look odd without a bath. The bathroom designer thinks it would be more "luxurious" with just a shower (along with double sink and toilet obviously).

If we did put a bath in it would mean compromising on the size of shower which my DH isn't keen on. Plus, we don't really bath often (once every couple of months). And when we do bath we use the bath in the main bathroom.

As an aside, we have no plans to move for many many years so I'm not worried about whether it would appeal to others if we sold etc, just whether for that size room we would regret not putting one in.

Any thoughts welcome!

I'd go with the large shower, but then I can take or leave baths.

I’m amazed by how amazed you are at people who live differently from you Warmduscher Grin

RGPs are rigid gas permeable lenses.
There are also many other forms of lenses including hard, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, overnight… there’s a whole WORLD out there that doesn’t match your experience Wink

@Warmduscher

Why do you need two sinks?
Two sinks are fabulous, and once you've had two, anything less feels a bit crap tbh.
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 14/10/2021 12:36

shower only ! that's what I did in my old flat and never regretted it . We have a bath here but ideally I'd like to get rid of this too , happy with just a shower and we only have one bathroom

Only when you're actually both in there at the same time, surely? We have two sinks in our main bathroom (I didn't design it myself) and I have to say I have far more fabulous things in my life than an extra sink doing nothing whilst I'm brushing my teeth!

Thank God Grin

I also have better things in my life than two sinks, thank the lord, but I was responding to a PP who was outraged at the thought. Not saying it was my reason for living 🙄🙄🙄

Well, fair enough. "Fabulous" was over egging it a bit, though 😂

starfishmummy · 14/10/2021 12:52

I'd probably try to completely re-jig the space. Loo and basin (one) plus a decent sized but not huge shower. I'm standing in it having a wash, I don't need a lot of room! I'd then try to have a built in cupboard for a washing machine and dryer.

SollaSollew · 14/10/2021 12:53

If you don't want a bath very often you'll probably be fine. However I regret not having a bath in our en-suite. When I want to have a bath I first have to clean up all the kid crap and shower gel they've somehow managed to stick to the side of the bath. Then the smell of my bubble bath seems to act like some kind of catnip to my kids so I've not once in this house ever manage a full soak in peace.

IWantT0BreakFree · 14/10/2021 12:54

I'd have a double shower. Two shower heads at either end of a massive walk-in wetroom area. Mornings are so hectic and I've always liked the idea of me and DH being able to both hop in the shower at the same time and have a chat and a laugh while we start to get ready. And double sink sounds great too. Would definitely reduce the time that it took for everyone to get ready in the mornings.

Shower only you have a bath already

We redid our main bathroom last year put a lovely claw foot bath in. It’s a beautiful ornament quite frankly. I was against it as no one uses a bath here but husband and daughter felt that a family home needs a bath. To some extent they were right, but to some extent so was I.

longtompot · 14/10/2021 12:56

I think as long as you already have a bath somewhere, then just have the large walk in shower.
We are putting a bath in our future en-suite as we are removing the bath in our main bathroom and putting in a walk-in shower there.

It’s not just different from me - it’s different from everyone I know! I can’t see the attraction of having two sinks, one of which is always in a mess as the OP describes, but I appreciate different strokes etc.

I prefer to make sure everyone in the house takes their turn at cleaning the bathroom, but again, I realise this is not how everyone does it.

karcheer · 14/10/2021 13:50

We have just done this, we got rid of the bath and the bidet and now have a large walk in shower and double sink. I love the space. I think if we didnt have a bath in the family bathroom i wouldve kept it, but we rarely bath so very happy with our decision.

CloudPop · 14/10/2021 15:53

@VenusClapTrap

If I was buying your house, I would have to rip out your bathroom and install a bath. But I’m not buying your house, and you’re not planning to sell it, so do what works for you!

I’m currently renovating a bungalow for DDad. He is adamant he doesn’t want a shower in his bathroom because he’ll never use it, and he’ll have more space if we don’t cram one in there. This is fine - it’s more important that a house is right for the person living there than trying to make it acceptable to future buyers, unless you’re buying it as a short term stop gap.

Or make your shower the same size as a bath, so one could be slotted in if required
viques · 14/10/2021 15:59

If it is a proper walk in shower without a door that you are planning then go for it , nothing worse than a teeny tiny shower where you have to twist yourself in knots to get in and out of and which is a nightmare to clean.

callmeadoctor · 14/10/2021 22:47

A sink each? We have a BATHROOM each (oh yes, he can clean his own toilet........) Who wants to share with a (wait for it....) MAN!!!!!! Grin Grin

Hairbrush123 · 16/10/2021 02:58

My en-suite is a similar size to yours. I wanted to get rid of my bath as well but I think it’s so unique for an en-suite to have a bath. Keep it
