Moving to Cornwall...will everyone hate me??!

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a home in Cornwall and wondered if there are any Cornwellians (or anyone at all actually) who can ease my fears (or give me a reality check) about being an 'outsider'. I have found the house of my dreams, I've been looking for a long time and will live there all year round and contribute as much as I can to the community. But I am not a local, I'm a single female moving on my own and I won't know anyone. I hope my fears of being treated like an outsider and 'shunned' are unfounded, but if anyone has any views, I'd love to hear them! The location is in South East Cornwall. Thanks so much Flowers

I was talking to our local councillor yesterdsy. He said that a lot of the distrust of difference comes from the hold 'Chapel' had over people . Cornwall was cut off and religion in small communities was everything.

I too live in South East Cornwall and I'm shocked at your experience in Looe. I know a few people who live there who have really been embraced into the local community. Have you tried volunteering in some way?

I love living here but there is an undercurrent of bigotry sometimes that I do find difficult. I also find the died in the wool tories/brexiteers who don't have two pennies to rub together very difficult to understand.

What a stupid question.

I suppose some people will if you act like a dick.

Unfortunately I can't reassure you. I moved to Cornwall as a single widow. I have been shunned and even been called a b....c by a complete stranger I never even spoke to!
Some people haven't been friendly. The friendliest people I have found have been those who don't actually live in the area or are holidaymakers.
Having said that, not everyone's experience is the same. We are all different and you may be welcomed with open arms.

I would give it a try and just move. Hopefully you will have welcoming neighbours who are willing yo reach out to you.

I am sorry but I have never acted like a d....
with anyone. If anything I have tried to reach out to my neighbours.

Please don't call us all d...s because we don't all fit in easily.

In all fairness to the Cornish born local, not everyone who has been unfriendly or dismissive is necessarily Cornish. In fact many are not!
Some of the rude neighbours are incomers like me, but they act as if they own the place!. Some have only been here a few years! On the other hand a few Cornish born people I have spoken to have been super friendly.
In the end you really can't tell can you!.

Plenty of people move away from Cornwall too. My friend said its beautiful but theres no money for most of the year as most of the work is seasonal

Cornish people are fickle! I’ve lived here for over 30 years and still not accepted, alas. My son was born in Truro but left Cornwall 3 years ago saying he wouldn’t come back.
