Does astroturf put you off?

If you're looking at family houses, would astroturf (fake grass) put you off viewing/buying?

I'm seeing it a lot in city terraces and semis these days. There seems to be a resurgence from being out of fashion decades ago.

@HelpMeWithMyHip

It was a selling point for the house we purchased. I love ours
Same. I'm not a gardener.

Though it wasn't 'AstroTurf' but real-looking artificial grass. Is there a difference?

TheGrumpyGoat · 12/10/2021 21:16

I wouldn’t base my entire decision on it, but as taking it out is time consuming and costly it might be the factor that prevented me from offering on a house.
If the house was otherwise perfect and replacing it with proper lawn was within budget. I’d overlook it.

minipie · 12/10/2021 21:17

@BootsMcToots

A house is a massive purchase with loads of factors, so whilst I am not keen on plastic grass, not in a million years would I base a property purchase decision on it! Me neither. This thread is crazy.
I think people are just very keen to demonstrate their —superiority— dislike of fake grass.
Bumblebeefriend · 12/10/2021 21:19

Would definitely put me off buying a property

GreenLunchBox · 12/10/2021 21:21

@MapleMay11

Yes, truly awful. Speaks volumes about the kind of person who owns the property too.
Bollocks 🙄
GreenLunchBox · 12/10/2021 21:23

@Narutocrazyfox

I would be put off immediately. I wouldn't bother viewing the property if it was visible on the estate agents photos. Horrible stuff, and a pain to remove.
Hahahahahaha!

Absolutely 🙄🤔

Not for me it wouldn't be because I am both clever and rich.

8dpwoah · 12/10/2021 21:30

@Bluntness100

And the sort of very narrow urban gardens that don’t get enough sun for grass to do well.

Nonsense. You get grass seed for shaded areas and there are many different types of lawn, not just grass. No one needs to cover their garden in a sheet of thick green plastic and kid on its grass.

Exactly..we've got a very shaded area in ours (big trees in the boundary line) and we've bark chipped it. It looks like it's meant to be there, because it kind of is!
HelpMeWithMyHip · 12/10/2021 21:31

@GreenLunchBox no idea. Ours is real looking too. Quite expensive I'd imagine as we've been here 2 years and I think it was down 5 years before that and it looks as good as new to me. It's obviously cheap, tacky and I am the scum of the earth

BasiliskStare · 12/10/2021 21:33

I ( personally ) do not like the artificial grass & it would be a thing I would factor in ( others would differ and rightly so ) - in the same way as needing a new boiler , rubbish tiles etc BUT not in one moment in merry hell would I care a jot about "speaks volumes about the person who owned the property " 1) if you are buying the house / property - they aren't going to be living in there with you even if you think that . 2) I am pretty sure there will be things in my house people don't like - As and when I wanted to sell I would not be asking them to be bosom buddies - just agree on a reasonable price for the house.

I do not ( personally ) like artificial grass but I think it is a little snippy to say it speaks volumes about some people . So I am going with @GreenLunchBox & calling Bollox.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2021 21:33

Ours is real looking too

It's still plastic.

Where did I say it wasn't pray tell?
financialadvicenc · 12/10/2021 21:36

We have a small fake lawn in our back garden. I wanted real grass, dp wanted fake, he compromised on other stuff so we went with fake.
I'm so glad we did. It's so convenient and basically no maintenance required.

daisypond · 12/10/2021 21:36

It would definitely put me off, but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker. I would want it removed, though.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/10/2021 21:38

It's a negative for me because I would have to replace it. It's not as bad a a garden covered in gravel.

meadowbleu · 12/10/2021 21:42

I’d have to factor the cost of removal, reconditioning the soil and replacement with real grass.

I hate it on environmental grounds.

BasiliskStare · 12/10/2021 21:56

Yes it is plastic & I would not like it but for those who have it done for practical reasons - let us not judge people for things they have done for practical purposes - an artificial lawn doesn't make someone a bad person. - really ? Where my parents live lots of people have had their rather large front gardens paved over for easier maintenance . The council are getting more on the case because rain / water needs a way to get out - but at the time those people did it for practical purposes.

I am not inclined to worry about what anyone does with their own house. As long as they know that ( & I am not in the market ) I would give the offer I could . But I have to say that artificial grass would be right at the bottom of my list when putting in an offer,

MrsKeats · 12/10/2021 22:49

Yes. Dreadful stuff.

userxx · 12/10/2021 22:52

No, if I liked the property I'd rip it up and re turf.

Mwnci123 · 12/10/2021 22:53

Yes

crankysaurus · 12/10/2021 22:54

Yes, bloody hate the stuff.

Suzi888 · 12/10/2021 22:57

Would put me off if the previous owners had a dog, (or I did!)
It’s like outside carpet, you have to vacuum it and wash itConfused otherwise it looks awful.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/10/2021 22:57

Wouldn't put me off at all. I have it in my small but perfectly formed garden. The soil is thick clay, I've tried everything to get grass to grow but it's impossible. Two gardeners have tried their hardest - at great expense - to give me real grass. I've had it re-turfed twice and I can't even tell you how much top soil I added. Didn't work. I got very realistic Astro turf, added lots of pots and climbers around the borders and it looks fantastic. Plenty of people haven't even spotted that it's Astro turf. The birds and bees love my garden and I'm very happy with it.

NashvilleQueen · 12/10/2021 23:01

V keen gardener. I hate it and wouldn't view a house with fake grass.
