Good family areas in Herefordshire

Hi,
My husband will probably need to relocate to Pembridge st the beginning of next year. Since I work in a hospital, I was thinking to look for houses in Ledbury that is close to pembridge and has 4 hospitals all at the same distance more or less so it will hopefully be easier to find a job for me. Is it s good place to rise a family? Are primary and secondary schools good? Other Good areas nearby? Thanks Smile

Hi @Bellavita123

I saw that your message went unanswered so I’ve delurked to give you some info about Herefordshire 🙂 I think we’re a fairly scarce bunch on MN!

I think Pembridge is in the north, of the county, close to Leominster? Leominster is ok, some parts v picturesque with the traditional black and white houses, beautiful countryside on your doorstep (but that’s all of Hfds really!). Some parts of Leominster are a bit rough though (rough in Hfds usually means a few weed smokers and the odd petty theft, not gun crime and car jacking!). It’s your average smallish sized town. Don’t know about the state schools but Lucton private is good.

Ledbury is quite far from Pembridge, in the south of the county. It’s very posh these days with lots of independent shops and cafes. Fairly expensive for the area, has a train station which may be of use to you (and is a rarity round here thanks to Beeching cuts). Good schools including a good state high school.

Hereford itself is a lovely city, small and very much a city by dint of having a cathedral, but very pretty and green with a beautiful river walk by the cathedral. A bit spare with the amenities for a city, but has an M&S and Waitrose, four other big supermarkets, Odeon, Courtyard theatre, some really nice independent restaurants and cafes and a few nice play parks/soft play. Excellent swimming pool with wave machine etc. Primary schools are generally good, high schools are a bit more of a mixed bag - Whitecross and Bishops are big standard ok comps, Aylestone isn’t great, St Mary’s Outstanding but Catholic. Cathedral school good if you want private. Hereford Sixth Form College is very good and a number of students get good grades and go on to top universities.

Ross-on-Wye is to the south and is also extremely beautiful, probably the most picturesque setting of all the towns in Hereford (it’s in the Wye Valley AONB). Amenities are good for a small town, got a big Morrison’s and medium Sainsbury’s, small independent cinema and theatre, leisure centre, independent boutiques and restaurants, a couple of lovely pubs right by the river and feels very rural despite being a market town. Primary schools all very good and the state high school is excellent. Haberdasher schools in Monmouth just a 15 minute drive away if you want private.

Don’t know much about Bromyard, it’s got a lovely little high street with independent butcher/baker/cafes etc, very pretty. It’s in the north of the county and feels quite removed from other built up areas on the few occasions I’ve visited. It’s definitely somewhere I would consider living if I was working in Hereford or the north of the county.

On top of the towns (and city) I’ve listed, there’s an abundance of villages with the usual pub, post office and primary school set up. All extremely rural and very farming orientated, but the roads are good in Hfds and there’s zero traffic a lot of the time so you can get around easily.

My very favourite thing about this county (apart from its rural beauty!) is that the people are down to earth, extremely friendly and completely unpretentious. You could go in to a village pub and find the squire from the big house supping a pint with his own gardener. A quick trip to pick up a second hand dresser off gumtree could turn in to a half hour chat and a new friend. Time moves so slowly here, no one is in a rush and everyone has time to help, my local Facebook feed is full of people returning lost car keys/helping injured animals/pulling strangers’ cars out of flooded ditches. No one gives a shit about how much you earn, your ‘position’ in the community, there’s no concept of things being ‘naice’… there’s certainly not much in the way of liberal elite types (the odd one here and there, retired academics mainly 😅), but there is a fair amount of diversity in Hereford, I saw a mixed race gay couple holding hands in High Town the other day and no one gave a shit for example! IMO it’s an amazing county to bring up children and we couldn’t be happier here after moving from London (lifelong Londoner here!) a few years ago.

Best of luck with the move OP!

You’re very welcome 🙂 are you looking to buy? Do you have a budget in mind if so? And are your kids primary aged or older? Hereford is a great, safe city and can offer a bit more in the way of freedom for teens with the cinema and skate parks/obligatory Nando’s, but you may be looking for more of a small town vibe, in which case Ledbury, Ross and Bromyard are probably my personal faves. Kington on the Welsh border is very nice too but v small… I’m sure there are many smaller towns that I haven’t visited yet that are also nice 🙂

Can I just ask your opinion on Malvern. It’s is another place with good location for mu job hunting.

Glad to hear that the county is a lovely place to rise children. We currently live on the outskirts of sheffield and although we love where we leave because of the great access to the peaks, we have been To Sheffield city centre in a couple of occasions recently and it’s definitely not a good place!! Many areas of the city are quite rough and I don’t want my children to end up with the wrong ppl. Thanks 😊

I have just seen your answer about budget etc. Yes, we would like to buy. I was thinking about ledbury or Malvern because if I don’t have already a job when we move, they have Hereford, worchester, Gloucester and chelthenam closish, so I will have more opportunities to find something

I was going to suggest you moved to the east of herefordshire - think of the Malverns area (the boundary with Worcestershire more or less runs along the top of the hills. There are nice villages (Colwall is nice but pricey it has a railway station) on the Herefordshire side and Ledbury is near to reach for better facilities.
I may be biased but I was born in this area and the border counties are amongst the prettiest and safest in England. Friendly too - so long as you respect the farming community and their way of life.

bunnybuggs · 12/10/2021 21:35

I would avoid Leominster and Bromyard - nothing wrong with them but they both lack good communications to places of work. Even A roads are not the best.
Leominster does have a railway station but the line goes north/south rather than towards the East where job opportunities are likely to be and travel is better (M5 and its links) .

Thanks a lot for the info bunnybuggs 😊

I’ve been to Sheffield a number of times so it’s quite easy for me to explain places in relation to there. I would say the rough areas in Hfds (and Hereford in particular) aren’t as rough as the dodgier bits of Sheffield. Sheffield is a fair bit bigger than Hereford and with that comes more crime and drugs etc. Some of the cafes and restaurants in Hereford and Ledbury remind me of the Eccleshall Rd area a bit - fairly upmarket, independent. Hereford has an area with big Victorian houses (Hafod Road area) again a bit like the roads around Eccleshall. Hfds isn’t a hugely wealthy area but it isn’t deprived as such (although has pockets of deprivation), just very rural and quite sparsely populated. South Hereford is probably the closest thing you’ll get to ‘rough’ in Hereford and while I wouldn’t pick it as my top place to live, it’s still ok. The towns all have a little area that has less fancy housing, higher unemployment rates, slight smell of weed etc but I haven’t noticed anything particularly dodgy!

Malvern I don’t know too well but have visited three times. There is the fancy bit right in town (Great Malvern I believe) which is nice restaurants and cafes, amazing schools if you’re looking private and I believe the state secondary is also v good. Primary schools are likely to be good based on the demographic and secondary options. I think Malvern Link is the slightly rougher end of town, but I’m from a city where teenagers are murdered on a daily basis, so to me a few pissheads yelling at the bus station isn’t rough 🤷‍♀️ Amazing views and surrounding countryside in Malvern too, and easy links to Worcester, Birmingham. I’m sure if you search for Malvern threads on here you’ll find plenty - it’s definitely more Mumsnetty than Hfds which is a bit too rural and old fashioned for some ☺️

Thanks a lot again. The comparison with Sheffield areas has been super!!! 😊

We live just over the border in Gloucestershire but Malvern and Ledbury are both our most visited towns. Malvern is gorgeous - good shops, theatre, and brilliant walks right on the doorstep as well as good transport links. The 3 Counties showground is great for shows all year round. Our favourite hotel Cottage in the Wood has an amazing restaurant complete with view.

Ledbury is a lively market town, with a good range of supermarkets and little shops but there is quite a lot of poorer housing there and it's sadly suffering from a lot of development around the bypasses ....... I think they've just got permission for another 600 homes. Malvern is a bit more classy, if that makes sense (although it has a few rough rounds the edges areas, like all towns)

Herefordsure · 12/10/2021 22:14

My last tip would be - check out the local news if you’re worried about safety/crime. Before we moved here (my husband is from near here anyway but I wasn’t that familiar with the West Country) I read the Hereford Times and Ross Gazette etc online every couple of weeks. Quite often the lead story would be something about a car crash or habitual shoplifter getting a custodial sentence, or at worst, busting a county lines drug ring. Then the next item would be about a flower show or an agricultural fair! Compared to the local news in London or other big cities it was extremely tame. I would give this tip to anyone looking to relocate, it definitely helped me understand the move I was making.

Hello @Bellavita123 Did you make the move in the end? I'm in your position now and hoping to move to Herefordshire or Welsh border area. It would be great to know how you've found the experience? Thanks!

Papyrophile · 25/03/2024 20:16

I know this is a zombie thread from the dates. We are considering Herefordshire as a retirement option, and probably unable to do anything very quickly, but I would be very keen on any updates. For the record, we're 67/68, moving from Cornwall, and would like to be within 90 minutes/2 hours drive of North Oxfordshire. I rather liked Leominster, but also Hereford, and the Marches. Ludlow is gorgeous, but I don't want to live there. We'd like good food shopping, good walking and enough cultural/intellectual engagement and activity to meet like minded people. And selfishly, I would like a Pilates class that isn't totally aimed at the geriatrics who need to do everything very slowly.
