Fed up of household items not being built to last

I'm prepared for people to tell me AIBU, but I moved into this house three years ago and it had two AEG ovens, barely used but out of warranty. Literally barely used as I could tell from how clean they were and all the pizza delivery boxes in the bins when I moved in. Fast forward two years and one of the ovens tripped the fusebox and has been out of action for 6 weeks while two technicians came out . The third technician is due tomorrow and they don't seem to have a clue what is wrong with it so I'm expecting them to say they can't repair it. I paid £165 for the repair and apparently if they can't fix it they just give you money off an AEG appliance. Well, excuse me but I won't be taking them up on their offer because their oven is obviously not fit for use. I will be buying something else.

We also bought a sofabed which after three years of careful use is broken so I will be buying something else. It's very annoying when you spend hundreds of pounds and the thing lasts three years. Are my expectations too high, or should products last more than three years? Gah!

The house was newly renovated too...I wasn't just going off how clean the ovens were!

Yanbu everything is such poor quality, no point retailers making anything to last as then they wouldn’t be able to see you more

Seeleyboo · 11/10/2021 02:12

We moved into our house 4 years ago and bought everything new. In the space of 4 years the washing machine and tumble dryer are past their best. The hoover and dishwasher have died and a very well known expensive toaster and kettle brand may as well be binned. All of these items are well known brands.

Let me guess...is the toaster/kettle Delonghi? I've learnt my lesson with them.

@Seeleyboo I think you need to name and shame. No need to be coy. We're all friends here😂

Yes mu dishwasher lasted 2 years , washing machine 2.5 , cooker was longer at 5 years , yet the cooker we had before was a hand mw down and about 20 years old
Its very much a throwaway society as its expensive to repair of you can even find someone to do in the first place

MimiDaisy11 · 11/10/2021 03:43

It’s a downside of capitalism. They want you buying the latest version ASAP.

I had this with a whirlpool oven 1 month out of warranty, had to get an electrician to confirm faulty part and was given a replacement oven by Whirpool ( after I made a huge time consuming fuss and had paid for the electrician and his report) but I have my doubts about its quality, despite it being top of the range ….. the woman at Whirlpool was totally unsurprised!

My Dyson animal pro is not great after three years, even without its appalling design ( propensity to fall over when using the wand attachment, hose too small which means it’s becomes blocked, very frequently)…. I am certain it’s suction is not as good as my DC11.

Insinkerator waste disposal unit is on its way out after 2.5 years

It is deliberate and totally unethical.

Eileen101 · 11/10/2021 04:39

Absolutely. My kettle and microwave are on their last legs, yet the kettle is about 18 months old and the microwave, about 4. They're a well known brand.
Planned obsolescence is terrible Sad Angry

Aquamarine1029 · 11/10/2021 05:36

Built-in obsolescence. Nearly everything is built so poorly. It's very frustrating.

BlusteryLake · 11/10/2021 05:43

So many small appliances are now built so that you can't extract parts for repair without breaking the entire casing open irrevocably. I wish it was illegal to make things this way, it is so wasteful.

dangerrabbit · 11/10/2021 05:49

There would be a market for appliances which DON'T have built in obsolescence

Pokhora · 11/10/2021 05:59

There is a new EU rule to make new appliances repairable for 10 years. eandt.theiet.org/content/articles/2021/03/eu-introduces-right-to-repair-rules-for-electrical-goods/

I have discovered this site recently which is really helpful

She works in customer services for an appliance company. If she was surprised everytime someone phoned about a broken appliance she would spend the whole day picking her jaw up off the floor. That's literally what she deals with day in day out.

I have my doubts about my dentist, I had to get 2 filings despite brushing my teeth and he was totally unsurprised! 🤣

starpatch · 11/10/2021 06:49

You are so right OP, its so frustrating because even buying an expensive brand, it is still likely not to last long. I try and look at design of things to get something that will last longer, eg avoiding touch screen on new washing machine- the manufacturers seem to have the opposite idea to make the item as complicated as possible then it will be very expensive to repair!

Another vote for this site. I have been impressed with what I have bought and try and keep track of the items they list, so when my current things go wrong, I can order from them

drpet49 · 11/10/2021 06:56

My Neff cooker and oven are still going strong 11 years later.

Bagelsandbrie · 11/10/2021 07:29

I’ve learnt the hard way that there’s no point paying more for white goods as it makes no difference whatsoever. I paid £800 ish for Samsung eco bubble washing machines and tumble dryers only for them to break so many times I ended up emailing the ceo of AO to have them replaced (which they did, very good customer service). I have an Indesit dishwasher which we paid £190 for that is still going strong nearly 12 years later….!

H8H8H8 · 11/10/2021 07:33

I bought all new AEG appliances when having our kitchen done, thinking I was buying quality.

Never again. The fridge was an awful design that you could barely fit anything in (should have seen a real life one, not bought from a brochure. Lesson learned).

The dishwasher and oven lasted 2 years and 1 month. You can guess how long the warranty was…. 🙄🙄🙄

RightsHoardingRaptor · 11/10/2021 07:41

I find the cheaper brands last longer than the expensive.
Beko washing machine 8 years
Beko tumble dryer 10 years
Beko over 8 years
Severin toaster 15 years

Kettles I can't seem to find one which doesn't break quickly though so have started just buying £20 kettles every 2 or 3 years when they break. They are used all day though as I work from home

RandomMess · 11/10/2021 07:43

We have a hob top kettle (have induction so it's as quick as a rapid boil one) still going 10 years later and cost £20 max.

Seeleyboo · 11/10/2021 07:50

@greenlunchbox. Indeed we are all friends. Kettle and toaster are Dualit. Cost a bloody fortune and the kettle is louder than a jumbo jet. Toaster toasts about 2 3rds of the bread. Hoover is a Dyson hamd held pet. Can't have it on maximum or it cuts out and the brushes rarely pick up any fluff or hair. More of a sucking hoover than a brushing one. It's just so annoying. The washing machine quite literally doesn't wash anymore. Tried all sort to figure why. Dishwasher is Grundig. None of the items were cheap. Ergh. I now have to figure out what to replace first.

mafted · 11/10/2021 07:51

I'd never buy anything from under the hotpoint umbrella of brands.
We bought everything except our oven from one of their ranges years ago and every single appliance broke down multiple times.
Since then we've had Bosch, Miele or Neff and all have been very reliable.
My toaster is dualit and at least 35 years old, it's had one element replaced in that time.
