Designing a teenage bedroom when you can't design

Hi my DS is almost 11. As he is going to secondary next year we have decided now is the time to redecorate and redesign his bedroom.

Except I am terrible at stuff like this. He wants a gamer look. I want plenty of storage as it's not a huge room.

He is have a small double for his bed, that's coming with drawers under. I though I could put his TV on the wall with a shelf underneath for his xbox. He will need a desk. At the moment he wants the deal for lego. But it will also be his homework desk.

Is the choice and interior decorator or going to ikea and buying a room.

Ds has autism and his room is his safe space. I really want it to look great for him so is he happy in there. Just dint feel confident I can pull it off.

Pinterest is your best friend here! Have a look for things like teen boy bedroom and gamer bedroom! You'll get loads of ideas

IKEA have a gamer setup room in the only local to me at the moment.

I was about to saw Pinterest too! I'm just renovating the kitchen.. I screenshot everything I see that I like on the internet and keep it in a photo album on my phone.. so google "gamer theme bedroom" and stuff like that, then screen shot the stuff you like and put in an album, then from those take inspiration, google the things you like.. for example "computer game wall stickers" and screenshot what you like and where it's from. Then start buying the bits and put it together

Get him looking at Pinterest with you, and as above, take a trip to IKEA.

I did both teens rooms from Pinterest boards I created and the Dc are really happy with them

Think about colour and themes and just get typing

DD likes the peg boards for storage from IKEA, they’ve just brought out a set up specifically aimed at boys and gaming which looks fabulous

Thank you all so much. We are going to look at Pinterest together tonight and go to ikea tomorrow.

I think it I find it difficult to visualise what it will look like in place and how to tie it all together. To make it look designed rather than just stuff I have stuck there. But I guess I need to look at the detail of the pictures rather than just the big pieces.

Having done quite a few "do ups" in the past few years (due to moves and changing age of the children) I have learned a few things I wish I had known before.
Their tastes change, sometimes quite quickly at that age. Therefore,
you will never regret a classic bed, desk, rugs, chest of drawers, bookshelves etc . Sheets, lampshades, paint, pictures, and so on can create everything you want. They are easy to change and manageabe cost wise.
Have fun!

Would he like to draw his dream room and you try to replicate the look as far as you can?

Nightbringer · 10/10/2021 05:18

@CanIPleaseHaveOne yes, that a good point. I have ordered his bed and the head board in a classic colour. It wasn't cheap as that will be his bed for a long time to come.

@FatJan unfortunately he hates drawing.

But we did look on Pinterest and we have lots of ideas. Luckily everything he liked was either ikea or quite easy to get hold of and not too expensive.

Its going to be a big upheaval for him. Long back story, but his dad is pretty crap and never stays in the same house for more a year. My house has become his one constant and his room here really important to him. He has been fine with changing common areas, but this is a big thing for him.

But thanks to your tips he seems to be looking forward to it now. He loved Pinterest.
