Talk to me about fitted wardrobes

I’m wanting fitted/built in wardrobes in a bedroom but worried about cost.
Have filled in a form with Sharpes but no ones got back to me yet.
Have looked at online wardrobes - has anyone got any experience with them?
Also IKEA pax - I can’t quite work out how it works. Do you send measurements?

Has anyone built them themselves off of YouTube videos??!!
Anyone with any experience I’d be grateful, ta

We got ours from b&q, the atomia range of something like that. They were fairly cheap to be fair, probably about a grand at the very most and we got the stair head boxed in and shelves built that connect to the wardrobe. I

We went into b&q with drawings with measurements and the guy sorted it all out there within about 15 mins.

Getting these for either side of chimney.
I think cost is around £2.5k

Cost including ripping out old wardrobes.

I had a built in wardrobe that was falling apart. So I got it replaced by a specialist local company. They were much cheaper than Sharps and Sliderobes. They did a brilliant job and it's practically doubled the space for storage.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/10/2021 20:36

Mine cost £2100. And was done in a day. No plastering or anything else that Sharpes said was needed was actually required.

I got 2 sets made very basic. A double floor to ceiling wardrobe with rail and 2 shelves and a single one with all shelves. About £150 wide in total. They were fitted into an alcove and I wasn't fussed about the wood going into the alcove. There's just enough wood to make the frame for the doors. I then use boxes from ilea on the shelves. Think they were about £450 each. That was 5 years ago.

IKEA Pax works really well if your space is a multiple of 50cm. I have them in two bedrooms, easy to put together DH did each one in an afternoon including lifting and refitting the carpet edges and popping off and tidying the skirting boards.

Blanketwars · 02/10/2021 21:14

This is awesome info thanks!!

@toddlerteaplease and @Newnormal99 you say you got local companies to make them - was it joiner? Did you just google?

Sorry we’ve just bought a bit of a project and I have no idea what I’m doing 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also can you build them on top of carpet? Or get the carpet done afterwards?

And @TheCanyon so yours weren’t in an alcove? We want them along one wall, but they will have to be built sticking out a tiny bit from the doorframe into the room if that makes sense, as the alcove is not quite deep enough

I think I googled sliding door wardrobes and the company came up. They specifically do built in wardrobes and other built it stuff.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/10/2021 21:19

My old wardrobe had carpet in it. They took it out and put a floor down inside it.

Blanketwars · 02/10/2021 21:22

@Lonecatwithkitten thanks so much.
I didn’t know it had to be 50cm.

Yes just a local carpenter. Ours was done after a loft conversion and I had carpet done after. I then just cut one off the off cuts to size and put a bit inside. They are nothing fancy but they do the job.

I also have a built in wardrobe in a hall alcove for coats shoes etc. that's the best thing ever!

Orangecrisp · 02/10/2021 21:40

@Blanketwars the IKEA pax are not fitted in the sense that they aren’t bespoke so you need to work around the measurements they are available in, eg 150 or 200cm width and standard depth. If you are competent at DIY there are lots of videos on YouTube showing how people have built fittings around them using MDF which make them look much more bespoke and truly fitted. We plan to do this.

CasperGutman · 02/10/2021 22:36

Pax don't have to be in a multiple of 50cm. They do a 75cm wide frame as well as 50 and 100cm at least, so any 25cm increment from 50cm up should be possible.

Simonutti72 · 03/10/2021 22:49

We used sliding wardrobe world - you can get tracks/doors etc to any size & they have modular interiors

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/10/2021 22:57

I have ikea Pax - 2 x 100cm frames, the taller height. I built them with the help of my FIL.
There is a Pax planner on their website so you can try out different colours, doors, handles and internal fittings.
I didn't need long hanging space, so have a shelf at the very top with storage bags, a hanging rail, & drawers in the bottom half. I have automatic lights which are really nice too.

We had inbuilt wardrobes put in by a local carpenter for around £3k (2017). Three double wardrobes and one single, plus lighting in all, a plinth built along the bottom and all doors were panelled along with the entrance into our ensuite. It was quite involved. I think it took about a week to install. We had comparable quotes from Sharps and another nationwide wardrobe company and they were all coming in around £6-7k.

If it’s an awkward space I’d suggest using a carpenter so everything can be cut to spec on site. Plus much cheaper to use an independent tradesman.

maofteens · 04/10/2021 13:52

I did a bump out of a hall cupboard into the spare room to house the washer and dryer (accessed from hall, not bedroom). This left me with a shallow 30cm by 180cm alcove. I'm getting custom wardrobes - the rail will have to come out towards you rather than have clothes hanging sideways, but for a spare room that's ok. One side will be full length, the other side have double rail on one half and the other half shelves. Four doors plus doors on top for space to ceiling for suitcases etc. £3000 painted.

Ariela · 04/10/2021 14:14

Don't put them on a cold outside wall, they'll encourage damp if completely fitted to fit the wall.

Goosethemoose · 04/10/2021 14:18

Gliderobes. I always recommend them when this comes up, they were about a third(?) the price of Sharps if not less, efficient and I love them. Will post a pic later
