Forgot to say we won’t be staying here forever so would be good to have an idea of what would be most desireable when moving.

Encaustic are gorgeous!

MultipleMum5 · 02/10/2021 21:44

They are aren’t they! They are around 3x the price though 😬

There is something about the checkerboard’s busy black and white that plays havoc with my eyes. I like that it is traditional, but I think it would drive me mad.

However, it wouldn’t put me off buying the house as I would put a runner over it, and it is a good look. If it isn’t a long term home for you, go for the cheaper option as I don’t think you can go wrong. The styles have lasted and are both still popular.

AmberLynn1536 · 03/10/2021 02:33

They are both gorgeous, you really can’t go wrong with either choice.

Undertheoldlindentree · 03/10/2021 02:56

The encaustic style get my vote. A much warmer and more welcoming look.

SpeakingFranglais · 03/10/2021 08:09

Same for me, they beat the black and white 1000 times

StrongArm · 03/10/2021 09:06

They cost a fortune don't they - we are busy looking at options for our house but we are planning to stay here longer

I honestly would only invest that type of money if I thought I would get it back - what have you got there now? Is there no way to make that acceptable?

If money wasn't an object, I would definitely get the encaustic ones!

Magstermay · 03/10/2021 10:02

I prefer the encaustic assuming it’s a period home. As a buyer I would personally prefer it but if you’re not there long term I’d go for the cheaper option unless you can easily afford it.1

MultipleMum5 · 03/10/2021 10:04

Right now there is some cheap laminate down. I hate it.

I can see us being here for 10 years so at least I can enjoy them, and I’m pretty sure we would see it back in the value. We have installed some beautiful sash windows and I don’t regret it one bit even if it was a bit of a splurge as they are just so lovely.

The encaustic ones are around £250 a square metre but again I think it would be one of things we would love to look at every day Grin

A lil bump for any more votes.

Those chequerboard tiles are likely to be encaustic too. Mine are. I have them on the path leading to my house. I don't like the look of the ones on the left I'd go black and white myself.

mobear · 04/10/2021 19:23

Echoing the pp I would have thought they’re both encaustic but different colours/ patterns? We’re also considering these but they’re so expensive. I’m looking at black and white marble now which is a lot cheaper and has a nice continental/ modern edge to it.

AlexaPlayBagpipes · 04/10/2021 19:45

We are installing the Topps tiles porcelain hallway tiles that look like encaustic ones but without the maintenance and much cheaper. Encaustic tiles require a lot of sealing and regular maintenance which really puts me off

Zinnia · 04/10/2021 20:37

The encaustic are lovely, but don't do it thinking you'll make the money back. The difference between those and the monochrome tiles is very unlikely to be the reason someone buys your house in 10 years' time, so by all means spend the money for your own enjoyment but not for resale value.

MultipleMum5 · 04/10/2021 21:04

Oh is that me being a bit thick- I thought the encaustic ones were the patterned ones!

Which is what I’m swaying towards i think. It’s good to hear people’s ideas though.

BlueMongoose · 04/10/2021 22:45

The brown patterned ones for me. The black and white is, to me, more institutional and cold-looking and I think may make the space look smaller (important if you're selling).
OTOH, I suppose black and white goes better with the current vogue for grey/colourless spaces, and would go with more other colours on the walls.

ojojojoja · 04/10/2021 22:48

I like the encaustic but I don't like the colours too much. If they did another colour I would go with that. Maybe a dark green or red or something.
