Improve my kitchen tiles

DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance · 01/10/2021 16:08

Just moved house. The kitchen has large ceramic tiles which aren't going to be taken out any time soon. I might cover them eventually but awaiting rewiring and damp work so there's no point doing too much right now. They are textured (seriously?) and I have literally scrubbed them to get them clean. The grout though is still grotty. Any quick fixes? How easy is regrouting or recolouring the grout?

TikTok has loads of people using toilet cleaner to clean tiles & grout with amazing effects. They pour it on, leave it 10-30 mins and then scrub and the tiles & grout come clean.

As they call it ‘toilet bowl cleaner’ I’m assuming they are American but it looks like toilet duck type stuff on this link

Thank you. I did a bit of googling and it suggested bleach was the ingredient in the toilet cleaner that made the difference. So I'll have a go with that.

What colour is the grout meant to be ? It looks dark to me.

PragmaticWench · 02/10/2021 12:46

I think changing the grout colour would be a lot of hassle for little improvement. They'll still be ugly. Definitely cleaning them would make you feel better about them though.

Can you afford to buy some cheap Lino and cover it? We’re in the middle of a big renovation project that will take a few years and as a temporary floor solution we just bought some parquet looking Lino until we lay the real parquet in about 4 years which is actually so far doing a fantastic job and is hard wearing! I think it was a couple of hundred pounds if that

Lino has definitely come on over the years! Wish I'd used it in the bathroom instead of tiles.

Consider branded Marmoleum and Linoleum from Forbo, they are made from wood flour and linseed oil rather than plastic. They do click lock planks.

WhereTheWildThingsArent · 02/10/2021 15:03

@Daftasabroom do you have marmoleum? It is beautiful and eco but it seems to me it might be slippy underfoot?

Daftasabroom · 02/10/2021 15:18

Not yet but it's going in the bathroom when we get round to it, I wish we'd had it in the kitchen but I didn't know it was a natural product until a few weeks ago.

Geneticsbunny · 02/10/2021 15:35

We had marmoleum at our old house and it wasn't slippy at all and was lovely and warm

WhereTheWildThingsArent · 02/10/2021 18:49

Thanks @Daftasabroom @geneticsbunny. It is amazing to have a natural product as resilient as plastic. The sample I have is very slippery but maybe that's the particular design.

Rather than try to bleach the grout, I'd stain all dark grey

DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance · 02/10/2021 23:03

Thanks everyone. I think the original grout was paler and the dark bits are stained /dirty. Tried bleach which made no real difference. I was planning on marmoleum as the green alternative so I think I'll hang on till the rewiring is done and go for that. Just keep them as clean as I can in the meantime. As @PragmaticWench says 'they'll still be ugly' whatever I do Grin
