How much do you tip removers?

They are packing and moving us - doing a good job (it was quoted during COVID over the internet and it looks like they underestimated the amount of things we have...). I want to tip them, just don’t know what is the going rate/done thing...

About £20 each? How many of them?

FinallyFluid · 29/09/2021 10:58

Having seen the documentary about Pickfords at least £20.

Last time we also bought them a fish and chip lunch.

Viviennemary · 29/09/2021 11:00

It wouldnt enter my head to tip removal men.

Vslightlystressy · 29/09/2021 11:00

Thank you! There are three of them - packing today and delivering tomorrow...

I didn't tip anything.

Paid the balance (£600) in cash and saw them distribute that amongst themselves.

elfofftheshelf · 29/09/2021 11:11

We had 3, they packed on day 1, delivered on day 2. We tipped them £60 each. It was 2 long days, they were clearly short staffed but they worked hard and did the job. We'd anticipated £40 per person, but we upped it given the effort they put in.

mklanch · 29/09/2021 11:12

why would you tip them? this isn't america.
we are in the process of moving and cant believe how expensive it is! I've packed everything myself with my own boxes and I've moved everything downstairs to make it easier for them. then i'm paying them £1500! i struggled to afford that let alone also tipping them on top.

sallyanne33 · 29/09/2021 11:16

£50 each and a crate of beer. They worked like dogs, to be fair, and they deserved it.

bellsbuss · 29/09/2021 11:19

Normally £20 each plus fish and chips or bacon sandwiches from a cafe.

Vslightlystressy · 29/09/2021 11:20

They are working really hard, the job has obviously been misquoted and I think they deserve something to say thank you - I didn’t know what was usual...

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 29/09/2021 11:23

I usually do £20 to £30 per person.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 29/09/2021 11:23

Oh and we always offer to buy them lunch, but in my experience they generally refuse that (have their own, or would rather dive off to a cafe and get their own).

Vslightlystressy · 29/09/2021 12:05

Thank you all for your help - really appreciate it!

£50 each plus lunch / drinks and snacks.

lachy · 29/09/2021 14:33

I didn't. It cost enough.

FerretFumbler · 30/09/2021 18:55

£45 for the 3 of them to buy some beers. They worked bloody hard on a boiling hot day. Complete troopers.

LeavesOffTheCactus · 30/09/2021 18:57

We did £20 each, a pack of beers and we also bought them a kfc

Vslightlystressy · 30/09/2021 21:33

Well - they ended up staying until 730 to empty the wagon (having been promised help!) had fed and watered them all day and have them £20 to have some drinks on us - they seemed really happy so thanks for the advice

They did a fulls day work and you think you underpaid?

FiveShelties · 01/10/2021 09:41

Have always tipped removal men, they have worked amazingly hard in all our moves - three of them transatlantic. Usually there have been 3 or 4 men packing for a couple of days and then loading up the container and have given them 100GPB between them, plus as many brews, biscuits, cakes and soft drinks as they can get through. A few beers on the last day have always been well received.

readytosell · 01/10/2021 10:04

I had 2 guys do mine, and gave them 30 quid each.

Vslightlystressy · 01/10/2021 11:20

Thank you for the kind responses - I have to say that I have a new found respect for them. I did give them as much tea/coffee/squash/biscuits/cake as they could eat which I think helped the food will when they were still unloading in the dark and the rain...

People tip because it’s a personal service and it’s bloody hard work. It’s not that people think they have underpaid the company, but it’s about giving a personal reward to the individuals who shifted the stuff…in the same way you show personal appreciation to a waiter or hairdresser….if you choose.

Given we are talking about less than £100 in the wider scheme if house buying, it’s a tiny drop in the ocean and actually by this stage, people are often very stressed and can see the huge difference movers work and are just so glad to have them there. That’s why they pay. And because it is a tradition in this country to tip certain trades when they’ve done a job for you. No it’s not required, no you dont have to, but most people factor it in and find it a nice way to finish the moving process…..tip to the movers and money for a takeaway and there’s a feeling if satisfaction at a stressful day being done.

Twiglets1 · 01/10/2021 21:32

We normally give each person £20 and also provide lots of drinks, snacks etc. If they like you they will really go out of there way to help you so it’s worth keeping them happy throughout
