Window fitting ~is this bonkers?

We are having sash windows replaced {not here for the debate about upvc etc 😁}
Quote for the windows is what we were expecting so no surprises.
However, the fitter has quoted £4,000 to fit them over 4 days... No scaffolding but price includes removal of old windows.
Does this seem expensive?? 20 windows

It’s at the top end, but it’s specialist work and he’s unlikely to be working alone.

No real help from me. But interested to know the quote you had for the windows. We're in the process of getting ours done. Need 17 replaced.

We had two bay windows (5 casements each) and an opening double casement all with new internal sills supplied and fitted for £2,945 in early 2017. Bay windows were on ground floor, other window was first floor.

OP I may have misunderstood your post.

Do you mean you a are swapping out wood and replacing with uPVC? I initially thought you meant you were replacing wood for wood and didn’t want to get into a discussion about uPVC being more practical.

Fitting uPVC is not a specialised job in the way forging wooden sashes is. So if you’re paying that for uPVC then it’s very expensive.

The issue is that supplies are short, labour is short and just getting anyone in to do anything is impossible.

emsworth · 29/09/2021 23:38

Thanks all. Yes they are upvc sash double glazed.
The windows total £10,000 (gulp) but the fitting is an extra £4,000 which I thought was a lot...

Can you not find a company who will supply and fit?

I once had some windows for an extension, the supplier manufactured them and our builder fitted them but they were slightly too small and neither would accept the error was theirs (I believe it was the supplier) and we ending up having to have a uPVC edge to cover the gap - not ideal at all.

mumofbun · 30/09/2021 15:18

We have had a couple of quotes, the lower one was about £14000 for the windows and fitting. Only 7 windows (2 of them are bays though so 3 sections each) so I think your quote sounds really low. Does it including planning etc if you're in a conservation area?

mumofbun · 30/09/2021 15:20

Oh I've misunderstood the post too - ours would be wood so i understand why yours seems so low now! We were quoted for uPVC but not allowed it in our area and i think it was about half the price including fitting - so 7k ish for 7 windows. So i still think your quote sounds ok! Shop around though!

Jigsawprison · 30/09/2021 15:38

I think that is high.
I had 5 upstairs windows fitted in one day by two men, so time scale wise that sounds about right for two men. However that means £500 each per day per person (£2000 for four days work). Obviously they've got to take out of that ni, tax, pension, insurance etc. This still seems high. I'm north and have had quite a few trades in recently and they seem to claim labour costs between £120-150 per person per day.

Chumleymouse · 30/09/2021 19:04

That sounds like a lot to me.... it’s £500 per day ,per man. I don’t know anybody who gets 500 quid a day for fitting windows. Any type of windows......
They might overrun a day but it’s still a lot of money.

Get more quotes.

WhereTheWildThingsArent · 30/09/2021 19:07

I think the windows sound very cheap, that's 500 per window for double glaze upvc sash? I can't find anything that cheap! Fitting seems OK ish to me.

SpeakingFranglais · 30/09/2021 20:39

20 windows is a lot!

PegasusReturns · 30/09/2021 20:43

The fitting is on the high side but the windows themselves sound cheap. Overall 14k for 20 windows, assuming variety of sizes is pretty reasonable.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 30/09/2021 20:46

We have just paid £10k for 13 windows and a conversion to French Doors

maofteens · 01/10/2021 15:00

Wow I must have got a bargain - mine were double glazed wood sash windows with box replaced too at £900/window (big windows in a Victorian house) custom built and installed.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/10/2021 15:09

Removing and fitting 20 windows in four days? That's good going I would say.
I don't think it sounds outlandish - £100 per window, whether removing old and disposing of, or fitting new.

Howsyourfather · 01/10/2021 15:13

We’re having 29 windows replaced and have been quoted £35000 including fitting/removal of old windows. They’ve said it will take two weeks to fit. Yours sounds like a bargain!

Howsyourfather · 01/10/2021 15:14

Some of our windows are huge though so the windows themselves are expensive!

emsworth · 04/10/2021 00:41

Very interesting the variety of quotes etc. It is a victorian property with some very big windows and 2 bays.
the £900 per window quoted by someone would double {almost} our quote so although wooden etc would be great another £8,000 would not be... 😊
