7.1ftx 8.5 ft bedroom?

Hi we are currently looking at houses and I’m very bad at visualising spaces
There is a smaller room with built in wardrobes
It’s described as a dressing room or office
It’s 7.1ft x8.5ft.
Would that be big enough for a single bed/child’s bedroom do you think?
Thankyou

Yes. Raised bed with a play area underneath and shelf storage within the wardrobes.

BeenThruMoreThanALilBit · 25/09/2021 14:31

Picture an average man lying in the floor widthways. Add a few more inches.

That room sounds fine for a dressing room or small office. Too small for a bedroom.

PlanDeRaccordement · 25/09/2021 14:32

You could fit a single bed and night stand in it with a small dresser for clothes but nothing else.
I would not think it suitable for a bedroom unless the child is only going to sleep in there and has a separate play/study area.

Jenjenn · 25/09/2021 14:34

Are these measurements of free floor space or is the space taken by the built in wardrobe included in these?

CornishPastyPirate · 25/09/2021 14:34

It’s free floor space not including the wardrobes

That size, with storage already there, should be fine, but could prove tricky if the door/window/radiator dont leave space for a bed.

I'm supeised it's not being marketed as a bedroom if its logistically possible, making me think there might be an issue somewhere.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/09/2021 14:43

Does it have a window? Is it through another bedroom? Old converted attic that can't be officially classed as a bedroom?

Calmdown14 · 25/09/2021 15:42

Depends where the door and window are. How does the built in storage open? Hung or sliding doors?
Could you rehang the bedroom door so it opens outwards into the hallway (fine if it opens against a wall but you don't want to be hitting anyone passing in the face!)
Graph paper to scale and cutting out a bed is your best bet

Calmdown14 · 25/09/2021 15:43

And how old is the child you want to put in it? IKEA extending beds are great. Keep more floor space while they are small and own bigger toys

Notebooksarefabulous · 25/09/2021 15:55

Its bigger than my childhood bedroom and the bedroom my son had aged 7-15 (neither of which had built in cupboards of any sort)

titchy · 25/09/2021 15:57

It's small but with clever storage would be absolutely fine for a child. Assume it has a window and own access?

ACloseMatch · 25/09/2021 16:01

DDs room was similar - we've just knocked it the to the next room. It was fine till her late teens tbh. She liked it snug though.

dangermouseisace · 25/09/2021 16:02

That's about the size of my bedroom. Mine is narrower, but slightly longer (about 3 metres). I am in there because I thought it was too small for my daughters stuff and wanted her to be able to play there. One of my teen boys might be moving in there soon- all they do is game.

dogsdogsdogs · 25/09/2021 16:16

That's absolutely fine. most three bed semis in my area have bedrooms this size plus smaller with children using them.

Bathshebahardy · 25/09/2021 16:23

If that's the floor space, plus there are fitted wardrobes, it is quite a decent size room. The third bedroom in a three bed is usually around that with no furniture or storage.

idontlikealdi · 25/09/2021 16:46

We've got bunks in a room that size, it's fine but they do have space again upstairs to spread out in

Svalberg · 25/09/2021 18:42

Same here, and there were 2 of us in there (bunk beds, 5'6" long, and we both grew to 5'7" tall)
Peanutsandchilli · 25/09/2021 18:58

I currently have a 4 and 2 year old in a room smaller than that.

My eldest daughter had a room smaller than that in our old house. She had it for 8 years and it was adequate. You just have to be creative with furniture.

It's bigger than most box rooms.

TheGrumpyGoat · 25/09/2021 19:01

It’s the same size as our 4th bedroom, which doesn’t have any storage. My 2 year old is in there with a single bed, chest of drawers and small bookshelf. It’s fine for now but we’ll be looking to move when he’s a bit older so he has some more space.
With the build in wardrobes it should be fine.

RandomMess · 25/09/2021 19:06

It's bigger than most single bedrooms in new build houses!

Starseeking · 25/09/2021 19:50

That's fine. It's slightly bigger than the box rooms in 3 bedroom 1930's semis near me which go for £700k plus.

Saz12 · 25/09/2021 20:05

It’s plenty big enough for a single bedroom, especially with fitted wardrobe in addition.

If you think of size of a single bed, then measure out how much space you’d have around it that might help.

CornishPastyPirate · 25/09/2021 20:10

Ah thanx everyone
Yes it has its own window
Child is 9 but dosnt have ‘stuff’ as such and there is space elsewhere for toys ect
The other 3 bedrooms are all doubles and will be shared with two boys together in one,one for us parents and one for my older teen. This room was also suggested as a nursery but I don’t know why not a bedroom.
