Fuel shortage and removals

We're due to exchange and complete next week. What happens if we can't physically move if there is no fuel for the removals? Would we just be out on the street with all our worldly possessions?

Been having this exact thought today myself!

In short, yes. You sign a contract which says you’ll be out of the house on X date and any problems which arise - whether they be your removal company not showing up, you not feeling up to moving out that day, or any other reason - are not a valid reason to break the contract, hence during Covid, most movers had specific clauses added to their contracts in case they needed to self isolate.

You can ask about the addition of a specific clause in the event of not being able to get fuel, but your sellers / buyers don’t have to agree to it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/09/2021 19:30

I’ve no idea what the situation is anywhere else, but I commented to DP as we drove past several petrol stations today that I was surprised none were closed or had any queues (south London) bearing on mind the media frenzy. I think most of it really is just hype, as we have zero problems here. But if you’re genuinely worried, organise removals and some storage now and an AirB&B so that you’re out of your place and won’t be in breach.

Elieza · 24/09/2021 20:17

We have problems here with idiots stocking up. There are queues into the street when I went to my local b and q.

maofteens · 24/09/2021 22:31

No queues at the stations I've driven by (SW London). I think you are worrying unnecessarily.

Hebeee · 24/09/2021 23:15

Lots of idiots queueing along the roads to stock up here too (south west Wales), staff on the forecourts fielding impatient drivers and some signs up saying diesel sold out 🙄

Elieza · 24/09/2021 23:27

I went to Asda and it’s shut its forecourt as no fuel. So I hope nobody really needs fuel as they will struggle at my bit. Glad I have a quarter tank. But I could be doing with my £20 weekly top up but can’t get it now due to all the fannies panic buying. You’d think they’d have learned after the food shortages. We are turning into fucking Russia with queues for sold out stuff.

Realhousewives · 24/09/2021 23:33

Same here and I'm in North Wales. The 3 closest garages to my home (Tesco, Asda and shell) have all sold out of diesel today. I'm lucky that my car is petrol. I know Tesco shut their garage down earlier because it's near a roundabout and the insane queues were causing lots of traffic to build up on the roundabout. Absolutely beyond ridiculous!

I hope you have a smooth move OP. Good luck

billyt · 25/09/2021 13:04

There is no fuel shortage but you'll always get idiots panic buying the minute someone says something is in short supply for a while. Even if they don't need it.

I had to use another route out of town this morning because all the 'sheep' queuing for petrol were blocking the frigging road.

twats.

CasperGutman · 26/09/2021 00:50

This is just a temporary bottleneck in supply: there's no actual shortage of fuel, it's just not quite getting to retailers fast enough right now.

People aren't driving more than usual, so everyone who's filled up earlier than they would have will have more in their tank and won't be buying for a while.

The petrol stations will have plenty of fuel in a few days. You'll be fine!

Elieza · 26/09/2021 11:30

It will likely take longer than a few days as people who have almost full tanks will go back to top up a fiver on a daily basis when they get home from work having used a fivers worth that day commuting “best make sure I have enough as I need to get to work” type thing etc. Those who wait and who really need it will have to wait longer to get it or sit in the queue too. A queue which wouldn’t be there if those almost tanked up people would just piss off and give others a chance.

The problem is greed and selfishness. I’m not talking about people who live in a rural location with no busses, if smilies who really need petrol for other genuine reasons, I’m talking about people who have two cars both almost tanked up and a Jerry can in the garage. And those who never drive but want tanked up “just in case”.

Elieza · 26/09/2021 11:31

Families not smilies.

lovelybitofsquirrell · 26/09/2021 11:32

You'll be fine. There is no fuel shortage. Once everyone has finished topping up their tanks this weekend I reckon it'll all go back to normal by then.

Don't stress op. I'm sure your move will be fine. Good luck.

FelineUK · 26/09/2021 11:51

Our removals today did not take place because removals company couldn't get diesel yesterday, and only bothered to tell us at 6.40am today while we were waiting for the two vans to turn up at 7.00am! Fortunately we're in rented with no-one else coming in after us but still, I effed a lot and cried because it was a friggin nightmare, sitting surrounded by boxes and having to find friggin removals company at short notice. Yes, we did - I called a former company that had quoted. More expensive but other removal firms are not able to move us earliest 2nd October!! Now I just bloody hope we can get the money back from the first company because I'm a little suspicious and, despite their 'appearance', their customer service left much to be desired.

Elieza · 26/09/2021 20:10

We have fuel here again in the two stations that had sold out.
