Any structural engineers on here? :)

Hi!

We are looking to do some very minor works to create some space for a kitchen. Taking out a wall that we are 99.9% isn't load bearing (as other houses of the same build have taken theirs out), and moving access to the cupboard under the stairs to the side (again, 99% sure not load bearing as have seen other houses make adjustments to this in our estate). My husband really wants an engineer to make up the 0.01% certainty factor as he is a bit OCD and understandably doesn't want to be responsible for bringing the house down :)

We have tried to engage with some engineers but all are offering a big service that includes plans etc., whereas all we want really is a brief visit to confirm what we think we already know about the two walls in question.

Is there anyone who would do this sort of thing and not charge £180 for the privilege? TIA

£180 doesn't seem unreasonable given an hourly rate of probably at least £80 plus travel time to and from your house.

I am, although client side now, and private practice would be charging min £150 for that. Teeny tiny jobs like that still need insurance, overheads, travel time etc. Professional Indemnity insurance has gone through the roof over the last 2 years - my husbands renewal was a 66% increase last time.

Depending where you are £180 doesn't sound unreasonable.

£180 doesn’t seem much for a professional to check your house isn’t going to fall down…

Thanks everyone! I guess you can't put a price on peace of mind. :) Costs all stack up and it does feel a bit relentless sometimes. But we will suck it up.

Our minimum charge would be £250+VAT, probably more to include a visit.
