The house in question is lower middle-class (of its time, obvs. - jeez, you’d need to be pretty well off to afford it in many towns and cities now).
Bare wood, especially pine which most mass-builders used, indicated that you couldn’t afford to paint the woodwork. Unless it was the superior mahogany, in which case you varnished (internally, usually room dividing doors and built in bookcases).
