Trying to put up a toilet roll holder with wall plug, which drill part?

Is anyone kind enough to help as I’ve never done this and watched a video how to but my drill has different types of attachment and I can’t decide which it should be. I may have to practice in a bit of wood first!!

I’m also nervous of drilling a wall as no way of knowing where electric cables are although I won’t be near a light?

One type has a much sharper end?

I’m thinking of trying the left hand number 4 but it’s only a guess

Depend upon the wall that you want to hang the holder on, is it brick/block? Because ideally you'll need masonary bits for those.

The ones in you picture are wood drilling bits on the right and metal drilling bits on the left.

If the wall is a stud wall with plasterboard, who will need a different type of rawl plug too.

Lastly, I strongly recommend that you buy one of those gadgets that identify electrical wire and water pipes before you do anything as it's a bit late when you've got water spurting out the hole you've just drilled ..... I speak from experience Smile

Hope that helps.

@Bagstolen sorry about all the typos!

mummabubs · 21/09/2021 11:16

Definitely check for wires and pipes first. Maybe Google this to confirm but I'm pretty sure the drill bits with the sharp ends are for wood and the less sharp ones are masonry (ie plaster or bricks?)

mummabubs · 21/09/2021 11:18

Oh yeah and to actually answer your Q! 😂 (sorry!) If it was me I'd probably go left 4 as well... If in doubt I'd go smaller as you can always make a hole bigger but having to fill and redrill if it's too big is more of a pain in the ass.

Oh you are kind, this is such a help. I’m torn as half tempted to get someone in which seems a bit safer!! It’s a job we’ve had waiting to be done for a year so I really need to sort it either way and very grateful for your replies, thank you

I also have these which are slightly wider at the tip and wish it came with instructions!!

Those will be ok for plasterwork. Definitely start with a smaller one than you think as walls, especially in old houses can crumble a bit. Electrical cables usually run a right angles from the sockets and switches so avoid drilling anywhere in a straight line above, below or put to either side of a socket or switch. Obviously there are random odd diyers who hide cables all over the place but that is unlikely.

Those are masonry bits which you need for brickwork etc.

For a toilet roll holder red rawlplugs will be fine. Yellow are a bit short and brown are overkill.

5mm drill for red, 5.5mm for brown. the rill size will be on the shaft nearest to the end.

Ours came with a Gorilla Glue type substance. So much easier.

Surpriseat42 · 25/09/2021 19:46

peanutsanschilli that sounds so much easier! I still haven’t been brave enough to attack the wall but at least I’ve learnt more how I should- so lovely of you all to help. I may well glue it now despite the expertise shared!!
