Crouch end as a family area

We are considering moving to Crouch end and I was wondering whether it's a stable family area or still quite transitory. We are currently living in a fairly transitory area of London and would like to put down routes. Still hoping to stay somewhere with a buzz and near good schools. Crouch end seems great but I am not sure whether it'll be the usual thing of people moving out for primaries, then before secondaries, etc etc etc. I appreciate that I could ask on Facebook but that's not anonymous hence asking on here.
Or could anyone recommend any other fairly central ish family area with a buzz that has a fairly stable population? Or am I after the impossible?

There are children at Secondary Schools in all areas of London. London Secondary Schools are full.

Lots of people leave London with their children, to buy bigger houses elsewhere.

Are there good Secondary Schools in Crouch End?

it's not really about secondary schools but about people constantly leaving all around us i.e. I am a bit tired of having to make new friends every couple of years because everyone else moves. Am probably feeling it a bit more after the last 18months but I would like to move to an area that has a little bit more of a stable population.

We're in crouch end. We love it, but people do move. There's been an exodus from dd's year (6 kids left post last lockdown). However I think it's marginally less than other areas of London. I think it's an inevitable side effect of living in London's tbh.

wizzbuzz · 19/09/2021 21:03

@ilkleymoorbartat yes, i think you are right, maybe all areas in London are transient. It's just hard having to make new connections all the time for us but also the kids.

When I lived in the area, it had many families with small children (say under 8) but I did find people left to go to the London suburbs or out of London at that point. Those who were London born and bred went to settled areas like Stanmore/Whetstone/Winchmore Hill/Finchley/Southgate depending on budget where you can be within walking distance to green belt with great schools but still buy a house with a garden. Those from outside London went out to Herts, Cotswolds or further afield like Manchester.

If you can afford Crouch End, try Alexandra Palace up the road. It's green and lovely, has great schools and people tend to stay there because it's so nice.

@NeedToKnow101 thank you. We have looked there but it seems really quiet in comparison to say Crouch End. Ideally, I would love to move somewhere with a buzz but also not too transient. Probably a pipe dream

Crouch end is lovely. Lots of cute independent shops as well as a Waitrose and Mark's and Spencer's. The only thing I'd say is the transport links aren't great but it's great for (and full of) families.

We left CE and whilst we loved it we found it really transient. Many friends moved towards muswell hill and ally pally, Walthamstow village also seemed more settled. That said 6 years after we left nearly everyone else we knew has now also left, I think it's the nature of London, whilst we had a house and garden it didn't compare with what we bought out of London.

crummyusername · 19/09/2021 22:22

Ally pally really is not that far from Crouch End for visiting shops etc. and Muswell hill is pretty good for cafes.

It is quiet, but it's literally 5 minutes drive, or 15 minutes walk through the park to Crouch End, so easy to get to those shops and cafes etc. It's much less transient then CE. Just an idea. Grin

Given that a forever home in this area costs £2m, most people moved out further afield. London has become transient far beyond Zone1 and 2 because of that. Most young families have to come with creative solution to afford the space they need (or come up with 2m).
