Lost trust in our builders

I noticed our skip was filled with other peoples rubbish when i was taking the rubbish out this evening. It had 2 large windows with broken glass, and a whole load of other things. I checked our cctv and was shocked to see it was our builders ! They arrived around 8am with their van and as soon i leave to do the school run they came out and emptied their van load of rubbish into our skip before they start work.

Should i confront if so how should i go about it??

Are they charging you for each skip or is it all included in the price of the job? If it's all included, I'd expect this. If they're charging for each full skip, then have a word.

Definitely confront them. In my experience builders take the piss as a matter of course, and the softer they think you are the more they take the piss. If they know you're checking up on them there's some chance they might behave.

PersonaNonGarter · 16/09/2021 23:36

Is it your skip or theirs? If you are just paying as part of the price then I think that’s absolutely fine. They have to deal with the rubbish as part of the contract. Up to them if they manage the waste between a few jobs.

Different if you hired and paid for the skip.

Does it matter? Will you need an extra skip as a result and will you need to pay extra? Problem with skips is if you leave them empty they fill up themselves! People appear out of nowhere with some garbage and fill it in for you, so it's actually best to fill your skip up yourself asap - if it helps your builders get rid of some rubbish from their other jobs - why is it bad? I wouldn't 'confront' them necessarily but you can discuss it.

We paid for the skip hire. We are having a 2 storey extension and there will be a lot more waste to come when our kitchen gets knocked through and gutted!

I will discuss how the skip hire works tomorrow and see what he says.

Obviously im hoping there is a qood explanation and i want to trust them.

When you say you paid for the skip, did you organise it/pay separately, or is it paid for in the builders price?

In my experience, it should be part of your builders cost. They then do a bit of skip/waste juggling. You have an empty skip, and another job is nearing completion and no longer has a skip, so they move the waste from that job to yours. When yours is at the end and no longer has a skip, then they’ll move your waste to another job at the start.

Right or wrong, it’s not uncommon.

So long as they don’t claim additional skip costs from you, and removal all the waste.

Our builders were having skip issues where councils allowed different things in. So they took some of our waste across to another site where they were working and put it in a skip there. We still paid the same skip cost and the other site paid less. Could it be something like this?

Yes thats pretty much what he said today! Im fine with that
