Nosey neighbours

We've recently moved into our new house. The house that backs onto our property is split into 2 flats so what in all the neighbouring houses is a bedroom is the kitchen for the house opposite us. On our first day here I noticed the couple in the flat watching us - ok fine I would peek at the new neighbours too. Since then I have caught them watching us so many times. My kitchen sink looks out to the garden so I am looking out a lot and the guy is often there watching me (they are a 20 something couple). I've got to the point now that I stop what I'm doing and stare back at him and he'll turn around. I have caught them watching me tidy my DDs bedroom too - again when I stare back they suddenly will turn around. My DH thought I was being paranoid but now he's noticed it too (we have only lived here 2 weeks!). In the spring we are having the downstairs remodelled with hopefully crittall or bi fold doors but this is going to make their watching us even more intense. Any suggestions what I can do?

So they are watching you and you are watching them?

Seeline · 14/09/2021 09:44

So are they just doing the washing up in front of their kitchen window which just happens to face your house?

If everytime they are washing up they see you staring at them, they are probably going to stare back....

Jonathancreek · 14/09/2021 09:45

No they are definitely watching me! I'm will be pottering around and feeling I'm being watched and they are standing at their window staring down at me

No Palavah, they are watching OP, she notices and stares at them to make them stop watching her. Not difficult to understand.

So they are above you, looking down on your kitchen? In which case I'd get some slated blinds you can angle down slightly so you can see into your garden but they can't see you. Hopefully the novelty of new neighbours will wear off soon and they'll lose interest.

Jonathancreek · 14/09/2021 09:48

I obviously haven't been in their kitchen to know the location of their sink but they stand there watching - it's not a looking up from your washing up glance it's a full on standing there with their arms cross watching us.

I had this, in the end after years of their outrageous behavior if I see them I say loudly "voyer" I have a few more comments I plan to make.

They raised two platforms in their garden at each end to stare in at us, and the woman leans over the fence to watch us in the back of the house living areas. The husband isn't bad it's the two sons and mother they are completely weird they just stand there as if you are a play or film.

I was relieved to find out the neighbour the other side thinks they are weird also, because of other things they do. I know it's not a culture thing because I knee others from that country who don't behave that way.

If it's what I experienced it's predator type watching. It's totally different to looking because you see movement or hear a noice checking watching, it's staring at you like they are standing in the theatre watching people in stage in a play.

FurierTransform · 14/09/2021 11:16

Does sound a bit wierd but I'm not really sure what you can do. Maybe they're getting stoned & gaze out the window alot. I'd just get some Lelandii planted asap across the bottom of your garden.

DespairingHomeowner · 14/09/2021 12:57

get some window film (from amazon) as a short term measure

burritofan · 14/09/2021 13:00

Spring bulb planting time is here, suggest you plant crocuses right across your lawn spelling out “STOP BEING CREEPY, YES YOU UP THERE”. (Adjust accordingly to lawn size: F OFF for smaller gardens.)

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/09/2021 13:01

Put a massive sign up in your garden saying mind your own business.

Anordinarymum · 14/09/2021 13:03

Get blinds

🤣^

What about that reflective film you can get? There isn’t much you can do in all honesty?
Speak to them, wave at them, get blinds…..
I wouldn’t like it either!

SunIsBehindGreySky · 14/09/2021 13:09

I tried a rediclious tarp raised high over the hight of their fence, they were embarrassed as they discovered it when they had visitors, it did not stop them. They started dumping their rubbish outside my property and they damaged my fence and the Tarp.

I don't know if it's related to excessive hoovering
and cleaning, concrete everywhere because they hate insects and them only having one set of friends visitors who once lived with them and never anyone else despite them being fit, working, children etc.

AgathaX · 14/09/2021 13:16

For inside, Venetian blinds that you can tilt to obscure their view, or window film to block their view.
For outside, are a couple of strategically planted trees an option?
Apart from that, go round and speak to them?

I may have to resort to nudism as a deterrent!

The pair of them are clearly creeps, normal people don't do that voyerism predator stare thing, it's a fethish, they would love that OP.

Was going to say start washing up naked. And/or make it into proper theatre: 'come on' with a different outfit or prop every time –cig in a holder, interesting hats, wander on reading a letter, tap-dance on…
Dreamstate · 14/09/2021 13:26

Just put up reflective film, but remember if you turn your lights on at night it won't be reflective no more.
