Bifold or sliding doors for corner opening?

We’re having a kitchen dining living extension done with a corner post. There is a 2m opening on one edge and a 4m opening on the other. The kitchen table will sit in this corner of the room. The problem we’re having is whether to have bifold or sliding doors and there doesn’t seem to be a perfect solution. Pros and cons below, anyone else had the same issue?
Bifold doors when open would stack and block access at on part of the patio - either the middle of it or one end making it difficult to get around the side of the extension. However would give a much bigger opening.
Also would have to have 5 doors on the 4m opening to allow for one functional door if that makes sense. So lots of frames! It’s our only access to the back garden so would be a bit annoying to open bifolds each time to hand washing out etc?
Sliding doors - lose the size of the opening but from what I’ve read are more robust. However, does this defeat the object of having a corner opening? Should we just opt for a window at the 2 metre opening side instead? I think we’d mostly open them to the corner side otherwise we’d have to go around the kitchen table to get outside which would be annoying.

Picture of extension attached! Table and sofa have been swapped around.

Feels like a big decision to make and it’s tricky!! Any advice appreciated!

I would go for bifold windows and a sliding door.

Bifold personally. I've got sliding and they're a pain

With bifold, one of your doors will be a ‘traffic’ door, so you won’t need to open the whole lot to access the garden.

We have a very similar set up. Have a think about how you'd use the garden space just outside the doors. We went for sliding doors as we thought the Bifolds would be in the way too much, blocking the walkway and stopping us putting a table in the place we wanted. It looks like at the top you've got about 2.5 meters to the boundary and the doors are 1.5 meters? That might be OK but you might find them annoying. Also the bifold on the left would potentially block part of the living room window when open and would maybe get in the way of a table/chairs you wanted to put those there?

Thanks for your replies, some useful points I hadn’t thought of. @alwayswrighty do you mind asking why you find your sliding doors a pain?

@Ecthelion thanks for this, I think we are leaning towards sliding doors now. I hadn’t thought about the bifolds blocking the view from the living room which they would do. The main gap is 4m and to the side it’s 2m so we think there will still be enough of a gap with the sliding doors open to get that feeling of being outside. How big are yours?

The back is 3 meters and the side is 2 meters which leaves 2m x 1m when fully open which still feels open enough to us.

You have some options with the sizes of the panes - if you did 4 x 1m then you could get them all to slide down to 1m giving you a massive 3m gap but a deeper track as there'd need to be 4 track sections. Or you could do 3 x ~1.33m and you'd end up with a ~2.67m gap which is still plenty IMO.

We’ve replaced bifolds so with sliding doors as we want more glass and less frame (to let maximum light in). We’ve gone from three doors (each with a thick frame) to two doors with only a 4cm sight line. Also, we never fully opened the bifolds so simply no point in having them.

WinniePig · 14/09/2021 15:25

And would replace the smaller opening with fixed light; again for maximum light / uninterrupted view. We did the same with our kitchen window and it is so much better!

Greenleaves20 · 15/09/2021 05:10

Thanks @Ecthelion! We’ve decided to go for sliding doors due to the size of the opening etc and not blocking the patio!

We may block up that opening @WinniePig depending on the cost difference. My husband thinks if we do it might block us from using that side of the garden as it’s just a small bit so we’ll see. Thanks for your msg!

@Greenleaves20 they are constantly in the way, whereas bifold will be concertina against the wall leaving a much bigger opening for us. Relooking at your plan though I'd probably slide the side.

edgeware · 15/09/2021 06:39

I bought a house with bifolds and you need so much bloody space to open them, on both sides. It means you can’t have pots, patio furnitute on the garden side and no furniture on the inside.

Greenleaves20

Have you seen sliding windows on a corner, they look lovely especially if you have built in seating under.

Sliding doors are probably cheaper as well :) I know you can try places like doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk for stuff like that and it usually ends up being more affordable :)
