No Shower in Family Bathroom?

Hello fellow MN - wanting to get your thoughts on a potential renovation of our family bathroom.

We are having an extension above the garage with an en suite - it wont be a tiny ensuite so I'm hoping to fit a reasonable size shower unit. For me, its showers all the way, for my husband he loves a nice bath.

While the project is here we will need to renew our family bathroom as there is some remodelling which will affect this (blocking current window and repositioning it). I thought we could get a nice standalone bath in the family bathroom and then my nice shower in the en suite so we both have nice / luxury ish versions of both.

We have two children, 5 and 8 and I'm starting to think long term, teenagers wanting showers etc and if i'll be happy for them coming into our bedroom to use the en suite.

Would we be mad not to have a shower in the main family bathroom (standalone bath would have the shower attachment but realistically not for standing and showering in)?

The bathroom is not big enough to have both and the compromise would be a shower in the bath (maybe L shaped).

What are your thoughts??

Do you ever have people come to stay? If so, would you be comfortable with them walking through your bedroom to get to the shower?

Attictroll · 11/09/2021 20:38

We only had a shower via my parents bedroom - it definitely was a pain for all of us especially if I needed to get up and out before them I would tip toe in - this happened a bit at secondary with clubs then jobs. Can you do bath in en suite? And shower in main one. My thoughts is also with people coming to stay. I even remember having friends staying and my mum being a bit weird about them going into her room to access shower.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/09/2021 20:40

No have a proper shower above the bath.

Likewise would they feel comfortable trudging through your room and using your en suite...?

Shower in the bath. Definitely. I'm sure you can find something very nice Wink

When we refurbished the children's bathroom (we have an en-suite) we installed an electric shower. Now I personally think they are not very pretty however the ability to shower down a child who has been sick on themselves or just not run out of hot water in a shower has been a great asset.

Once they hit secondary school they were showering every morning. They also play football/rugby in PE and they don't shower afterwards as they are not allowed so often come home with muddy legs so shower at home after school.

The en-suite is primarily just for me and Dh, we can shower in there whilst the children are using the bathroom to shower rather than 4 people queuing for a shower in the mornings.

soughsigh · 11/09/2021 20:50

I know a colleague that did just this and didn't seem to struggle.

However, I personally wouldn't want teenagers showering in my ensuite 😂. I would definitely get a shower over the bath.

ItsSnowJokes · 11/09/2021 20:50

You need a shower in both bathrooms. People would be put off if you ever sold and also as your children get older they will want a shower every day. You will not want grumpy teens coming in and trashing your ensuite every day.

Glitterlikeawinner · 11/09/2021 20:54

Good point about visitors, although we rarely have anyone stay over, we have a very small family and they all live local.

Its the teenage years that i just think it might become an annoyance, right now it would be fine, but long term possibly not :-(

shower over bath is a good compromise

Porridgealert · 11/09/2021 21:05

When you say stand alone bath, do you mean a freestanding bath? If it's a small bathroom they take up a lot of space. Definitely a traditional bath with a shower will give you more room.

Porridgealert · 11/09/2021 21:06

And you definitely do not want your children - of any age really - in and out of your bedroom and en suite.

purpleme12 · 11/09/2021 21:07

Why wouldn't you must get a bath and have shower in it?
Almost every house I've been to has that

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/09/2021 21:10

Weve just got rid of the bath in the only bathroom as everyone showers and a good shower was needed more than a bath. We have yet to miss it. Even the 8yo.

Peanutsandchilli · 11/09/2021 21:11

Our main bathroom has a shower attachment on the bath and it's a bloody nightmare tbh. It's a jacuzzi type bath (that doesn't work) which was installed by the previous owners and I can't wait to replace it with a proper shower and a normal bath. The kids always use the shower over the bath in our ensuite and it's a pain for both us and them, coming into our room at all hours.

Glitterlikeawinner · 11/09/2021 21:18

hmmm could be a compromise......Hmm

Yes you'd be mad to do that. Surely the vast majority of people in the UK shower most days rather than bath and by the time your children are teenagers they'd be no different.

weegiemum · 11/09/2021 21:42

We recently redid our en-suite and family bathroom (leaking problems).

We put a new shower unit with electric shower in the en-suite at walk in level (I'm disabled and don't do steps where it's slippy!). We put a new, longer bath into the kids bathroom (the 2 still at home are 17 and 19) with a rainfall shower that works off the combi boiler and we are The Best Parents Ever. Both of them use it, sometimes more than once a day and now we have a guest room where dd1 moved out it gets used by guests too. Wish I could get in to the bath, it sounds amazing!

Hoppinggreen · 11/09/2021 21:58

We recently did both of our bathrooms.
We put a big walk in shower in the family bathroom and a corner jacuzzi with shower over in the ensuite.
Works for us with a 12 and 16 year old

MaggieFS · 11/09/2021 22:04

Why can't you get a decent shower over the bath? If you have a good size bath, the floor area to stand in for a shower won't be much different to the floor area of a good size shower tray.

For all the reasons pp have mentioned, I think you'd be daft not to have both.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 11/09/2021 22:10

As the mum of teenagers I'd say definitely get a shower over the bath in the kids bathroom.

This

You will lack privacy in your bedroom. It will also be really inefficient as the kids would need to shower/get dried/get dressed. Imagine 4 of you needing showers daily before work & school.

Also when the kids are older they may have friends stay who will also need a shower

She really needs a traditional bath for the shower, but she wants a freestanding bath and they're not practical for showers over them and screens, curtains etc.
MaggieFS · 11/09/2021 22:53

@Porridgealert Thanks, wasn't sure if she meant free standing or not.

Next q... why do people have this obsession with love for freestanding baths. They look good in the right setting but are woefully impractical! Whenever I've been in one, they're not that different to a generously sized fitted bath (or whatever you call them) so just don't seem worth it to me. Certainly not at the expense of a shower.

WinterCarlisle · 11/09/2021 23:07

We’ve just done a big renovation including extension: the DC now have their own bathroom - we considered NOT having a bath in their bathroom, just a big walk in shower bit in the end decided on a shower - over - bath. So versatile! We have a walk in shower in the extension en-suite so was super handy when DS2 broke his leg 5 mins after it was all finished Hmm. I think go for long term practicality and versatility rather than the (I think slightly dubious) ‘wow’ factor or a free standing bath.

No way would I want a sweaty 18 year rocking up at 2am for a shower in my en suite after being out doing god knows what Grin
