Miele washing machine help

WandaVision2 · 11/09/2021 13:26

I’m hoping for some advice please Smile

My washing machine has died and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the amount of choice out there.

I read on MN quite a few times that Miele washing machines are worth the money and are built to last, but they are very expensive so I’m not sure.

I’m also confused by their 2 dose system. It looks like you can only use Miele detergents and softens!

My last 2 washing machines have been Miele, I wouldn't buy any other make now. The first one lasted 14 years and and the current one is 3 years old. My current one has the 2 dos system but it also has the normal detergent drawer so I can use washing powder the usual way. They are most definitely built to last.

Igmum · 11/09/2021 13:35

Not sure I'll be much help OP because I don't know about the two dose system but just to say that my 21 year old Miele is still going strong and I would definitely recommend one

TheVanguardSix · 11/09/2021 13:37

My Miele is 9 years old and I wouldn't go with any other brand. I've never used anything but the usual store-bought detergents and conditioners out there. I never even knew there was such a thing as Miele detergents!
Mine has survived Sainsbury's, Waitrose Essential, Fairy, Persil, and the rest. Still going strong! It's a workhorse, my Miele.

umberellaonesie · 11/09/2021 13:41

12 year old Miele here which has run at least twice daily in that time.
3 boys = nappies, rugby kit, towels galore.
The two system is optional I just use normal detergent

JulesJules · 11/09/2021 13:44

I've got a Miele and would definitely recommend. It's a fairly basic one, for them, so no dosing system but still expensive I'm afraid. I wanted one with a good drum size, and a 20 min quick wash programme. Got it from John Lewis and it came with a free ?5 year guarantee/warranty.

Two things the washing machine man said to me -
Buy a good machine (ie Miele) but don't bother getting a top model - most people don't use the majority of washing programmes. It's also more to go wrong. The second thing was that you never need to use more than one tablespoon of washing powder, most people use far too much (well it tells you to on the box, unsurprisingly) and this actually causes problems for the machine over time, as well as costing you more. Oh, and run a 90 degree wash with the machine empty once a month.

WandaVision2 · 11/09/2021 14:08

Brilliant, thanks everyone for the replies. It looks like it’s definitely going to be a Miele then.

It’s good to know I can just use any laundry detergent! It felt like it would be a faff having to order it from them rather than being able to pick it up with my weekly shop.

Now I just need to work out which model to get. It’s a good call to not bother with the most expensive ones. We currently only use 2 or 3 different wash programmes.

Previous Miele WM was my best ever appliance…replaced with basic model 18 months ago. I’m always washing …. Expecting it to last at least 10 years. I’d be sad if I had to buy a different brand .

AuditAngel · 11/09/2021 14:16

Our Miele is 19 years old and going strong. We were asked recently why we had such a small wash capacity, and our response was this was a normal capacity when we bought it and we wouldn’t replace it until we had to.

Our previous Miele dishwasher was another matter. That was such a lemon, we had the engineers out so many times, Miele themselves told the shop to refund us.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/09/2021 14:21

I always have Miele appliances but while the 2 dose machine is fantastic it's such a load of faff to keep over riding it to use your own and it needs flushing through . I'd go for one that isn't auto dosing.

Dinkydonk55 · 11/09/2021 14:23

Yes I agree with the above
Just replaced our 16yo Miele. I was dubious about the twindos system but it seems fine so far, and there is the usual drawer too. Although actually so far am just enjoying not having to think about it and using the cartridge (which came included)

Dinkydonk55 · 11/09/2021 14:24

And I’m really enjoying the increased capacity (9kg)

Buttton · 11/09/2021 14:30

For the twin dos you can buy easy refill bottles and put your own liquids in which is much cheaper and you still get the ease of just pressing start.

Have a Miele. My second. Wouldn't buy another. Don't bother with the top of the range. Go middle or basic.Still expensive! I love it.

OrcharD14 · 11/09/2021 15:04

I can’t comment on Miele, but my Indesit washer/dryer is still going strong, after 18 years. A friend spends far more on appliances, as she insists on Bosch, but I can’t see any difference in the performance or longevity of hers, compared to mine. I have a Beko double oven & fridge/freezer & they’ve also given me many years of reliable service. Just my experience.

Don't need to buy special Miele containers apparently, you can use empty ones that come with the machine, you will get a big box of them as standard.

There was no info on this when I got mine, obviously more now as more people have bought that model.

ChequerBoard · 11/09/2021 15:23

I had Miele for years but have switched to Samsung now.

My last Miele machine needed a very minor repair but the costs of the basic part plus fitting was such a ridiculous amount it did not make sense to repair it.

I replaced it with a Samsung machine that was less than half the cost of the Miele and it has been just as good if not better than the Miele.

I am in the process of refurbishing the scullery so wanted a new matching washing machine and tumble drier and have gone for the top model Samsung for both. Wifi enabled, add wash function etc. Both machines cost amount the same as a base model Miele washing machine.

Original Samsung washing machine is still going strong and has been moved to our annexe.

sunshinesupermum · 11/09/2021 15:31

Which Samsung model have you bought Chequerboard? I would need a washer dryer combo though, due to space limitations. Have always had them and they are fine.

ChequerBoard · 11/09/2021 15:44

I have the Samsung series 9 separate washing machine and tumble drier.

This would be the washer drier in the same range. If you are a Costco member, they are selling them at really good prices at the moment. At Costco this one is £629 whereas the same machine is £1000 from AO who are usually the cheapest retailer.

I bought the Miele WEG365. It’s 9kg with just the detergent drawer, I wasn’t really interested in the dosing system as I have the autodos system in my dishwasher and I never use it.

It’s good but definitely not as good as my last Miele washing machine. Although to be fair I haven’t had the best experience with it-I bought it in March and they ended up replacing it a couple of weeks ago after 4 engineer visits and a trashed load of clothes. They would insist the dodgy performance was because of wooden floors-which I don’t have or that I wasn’t using it correctly! They couldn’t explain why it would randomly turn the temperature to 90° during a wash cycle though…. And a multitude of other issues!

My replacement washing machine is great but I’m not convinced it’ll last as long as my last washing machine. (not good when I’ve spend £1k+ on it) it’s extremely quiet and washes very well.

FurierTransform · 11/09/2021 18:14

I'd avoid Miele. It's pretty obvious that they are not manufactured to the standards of old, so you are more reliant on the 'service' / warranty than before - that's essentially what you're paying for.

And it seems seriously variable. I know someone who had to wait almost 2 weeks for an engineer just to turn up. And of course you don't want to pay to get it repaired outside of the Miele network.

I think I'd just get a cheap brand that has the features you want. If it dies, no stress - drive to Curry's and pick up a replacement the next day :)

Thanks Chequerboard
