Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to my last thread. I took on board your comments, and have created two new plans for comments.

  1. FF on the right
  2. FF on the left

Option 1. I moved FF to the right to free up that dark corner, but there's now less worktop space as a result. The sink cannot go right next to the FF (right?) so I can't swap it with the 30cm cabinet. There's a lot more worktop to the left, but I don't think I'd use that as food prep space.

Option 2. I kept FF on the left. I replaced the double sink with a single, and swapped its location with DW. Now there's a good stretch of prep space. This is my preferred design. Here's a link if anyone is inclined to have a tinker! kitchen.planner.ikea.com/planner/#/gb/en/planner?projectId=DD36F728-4686-4C61-AA8E-F4FE829F8A23&ref=share

I really must keep the range. Those who remember my floor plan, I also want to keep both doors in the kitchen (into hallway and into conservatory). I am ok to lose the window, but I don't think that gives me much to play with.

Please let me have your comments?

Here's a floor plan so you don't have to flick back to the old thread. I don't want to swap the dining room with the kitchen. We're getting a big dining table, and I want to keep an area for the children to play in.

option 2 from a visual viewpoint. Option 1 with the huge FF next tot he sink will feel claustraphobic as you wash up.

SwayingInTime · 10/09/2021 11:20

I genuinely love option 1 so much more that I am going to put my IKEA plan on here - the improvement is remarkable!

RJnomore1 · 10/09/2021 11:20

The ff to the left is much better.

I’m going to be radical sorry

I’d forgo that utility given the little space you have and knock through to make a bigger room, box off the route through the weird looking hall thingy with the curved wall?

backtoschoolnow · 10/09/2021 11:22

I think you will find opening the fridge door by the cooker annoying and the corner work top space impractical.

JedEye · 10/09/2021 11:25

I prefer option 1 aesthetically.

I think option 2 looks very busy and dark over on the left with all the wall cupboards next to the fridge freezer. But good lighting may help with that. Or less wall cupboards.

JedEye · 10/09/2021 11:27

I also think option 1 looks more balanced

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 11:29

I attach a Tom Howley kitchen again, which is like my FF on the left plan. It doesn't look too dark, with good lighting. Though I appreciate it might be slightly wider than mine.

Option 1, all the way'

ClaudiaWankleman · 10/09/2021 11:34

They also seem to have a skylight/ glass roof right above the corner which will brighten considerably.

If you have the FF on the left, and are able to keep it flush with the rest of the cabinets and worksurface then it won't feel as claustrophobic. The Tom Howley kitchen has it stepped out, which is undesirable for me.

And what on earth is that under-freezer dirt trap for apart from making cleaning hellish?

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 11:37

Perhaps a mouse nest?

The front will not be flush. And we sadly do not have a skylight in the kitchen, as it would just open up to a bedroom. A fireman's pole?

Those saying go with option 1, what do you say to the loss of worktop? And the loss of 'triangle' between sink, FF and oven?

I think you’ll use the lovely big worktop on the left and be glad that it’s separate from the dirty dishes.

Re the triangle, I think the fact you can access all three areas easily is the main objective. You won’t have a ‘proper’ triangle unless you have another side to your kitchen so I wouldn’t worry too much.

i'm still going to vote for option 2 because I think I originally suggested it.

but if it were my home, I'd have an induction hob + undercounter oven instead of the range, and that would give more flexibility. It also gives more worktop space because an induction hob can be used as space to chop veg / put down plates when off, in a way that a gas hob never can.

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 11:50

Parietal we're on 100% the same page, as I am indeed getting an induction with under counter oven.

I don’t think either seem to have much worktop , where are you planning on putting things like mixers / toaster / microwave etc . I’d change the open shelving to something else as it will be a massive dust gathering issue .

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 11:57

Slightly separate question - does anyone know how tall IKEA base units are, including plinth? It says 80cm for the units, but I'm assuming it's actually 90cm with plinth, as otherwise feels very low!

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 12:02

Those who prefer option 2, do you think the range should swap with the cabinet with drawers so that the range is more central?

OP posts:
Cyw2018 · 10/09/2021 12:04

Tall cabinet near the internal door not the window as it will block light.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/09/2021 12:17

I'm afraid I'm in the radical camp too. I would also be losing the utility room and extending the kitchen I think.

If that is not an option - how will you actually use the utility? Is it as a laundry room? If so I would seriously consider losing the door from the hall to the kitchen and making the kitchen only accessed through the reception room. It's not perfect, but it would allow you to extend the kitchen units along that wall which would make a big difference in terms of workspace. Our kitchen was the same size but due to lack of doors we were able to get that extra and it made a massive difference.

PattyPan · 10/09/2021 12:20

I agree the cooker and drawers should be swapped and that would make that corner less cramped if you have the ff on the left. With the cooker in the current position I don’t think you’d really be able to use the countertop between it and the ff for anything.
Could you also swap the wall cabinets to over the sink and have shelves in the corner instead? I think that might make the corner less dark too, and more cabinets is better than more shelves IMO.

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 12:23

I think not to extending into the utility. The utility currently houses the boiler, washing machine, and a massive freezer. I'd like these to be separate from the kitchen. Plus I need somewhere to keep unsightly crap!

OP posts:
ISeeTheLight · 10/09/2021 12:28

Do not go with that tiny little cabinet to the left of the hob. We have one like that and it's a fucking nightmare. Total waste of space. So I think it needs a total rethink. Can't you go to one of the kitchen chains and ask them to do a plan? You can then copy that in ikea.

Option 2 the sink is to close to the hob imo.

kitchenplanner · 10/09/2021 12:30

Iseethelight - there isn't a tiny cupboard to the left of the hob. It's a 88x88 corner unit with carousel. And do you really mean hob is too close to sink in option 2? There's 120 between them.

OP posts:
mamaoffourdc · 10/09/2021 12:44

Could you block up the window and create a wide u shape adding more cupboards?

Hebeee · 10/09/2021 12:50

Option 1 for me.... although I'd still be seriously considering enlarging the existing kitchen or moving it elsewhere 😉
