Warm white paint

I'm looking for the perfect warm white paint. We moved here a year ago and the whole house is brilliant white. I don't hate it, but would just prefer a bit of warmth as it can look a bit clinical sometimes.

For context, if it's relevant, it's a rural cottage that has been modernised/extended. The rooms on the extended part are very light, the 'original' rooms are quite dark. Ceilings not overly high, lots of exposed stone. There's quite a lot of natural pine which I'd like to paint white one day, but that won't be happening for a while. Also, the carpets and bathroom flooring is all a hotch pitch of greys and browns and they will be replaced eventually with something neutral.

I've attached some photos from the sales details so you can get an idea.

So please help me with the perfect warm white paint. I painted my whole bedroom in Dulux Almond White yesterday thinking it was great, but now it's dry it looks like magnolia Confused

Another vote for LG Slaked Lime, or Johnstones Trade colour matched at Brewers.

We have Dulux White Mist in a north facing hallway. It'd say it is a neutral off white. Bright, but soft. Might be worth a tester.

I have found this helpful…www.farrow-ball.com/neutral-groups

Little Greene's Slaked Lime

justabigdisco · 11/09/2021 12:47

Following as I have a similar issue with a lot of exposed stone and dark rooms. Also considering Wimborne white

@setthecontrols

Don't get the love for Timeless on here- I think it's a grubby looking white! Have a look at Dulux Summer Linen- not a hint of yellow or grey.
One woman's grubby is another woman's neutral, and for woodwork, which is where I use it, it 'goes quietly' with just about everything.

I find the currently fashionable 'everything grey' look is depressing and dreary in the extreme, but a lot of people love it, and I have to admit it looked fair enough on the house we sold (we did it grey and white because the HA told us it would sell faster that way). OTOH I bet a lot of people would hate the blood-red walls with hand painted Victorian Gothic top border in blue and gold, and dark wood bookcases, that I plan for my back siting room, but maybe a few other people would like it and think a neutral alternative was insipid. It would be a dull old world if we all had the same tastes...Grin

I came on to say Slaked Lime by LG as well. Seems many have beaten me to it.

SnarkyMilarky · 12/09/2021 10:17

Dulux Whisper white

MrsKDB · 12/09/2021 10:17

We tried Wimborne white when I was on the same mission but it came out too yellow. Almost magnolia 😬. Ended up with wevet and strong white, depending on the light.

DragonMamma · 12/09/2021 10:21

Another vote for white cotton over here.

SusannaM · 12/09/2021 10:25

Timeless is my go-to white, but not white. I wouldn't say it is grey tinged.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/09/2021 10:29

Wimbourne is yellow based so about that of your don't want that.

I think I'd be looking at a barely there grey rather than white which as a pp said will be seen to paint over!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/09/2021 10:29

**avoid that if you

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 12/09/2021 10:34

Another vote for LG Slaked Lime. This is my lounge with walls, ceiling & woodwork all painted with it. Just a simple warm white.

I spent years looking for the perfect off-white and have settled on Timeless by Dulux. I love it but always buy the Easycare Matt as you can scrub it clean if it starts to look a bit grubby from kids/pets.

setthecontrols · 13/09/2021 21:39

Blue Mongoose
Timeless is great on woodwork- I was commenting on the walls in our house and we were very disappointed as it looked so dull. You're right that everyone's taste is different and also the aspect and light makes a huge difference.

Hi all, thought I'd report back with my findings as I ended up with a colour that wasn't mentioned on here after all that!

By complete chance I happened to visit a friend who has a similar style property to mine. She's just redecorated in a lovely warm white so I asked her what it was. It's Antique Cream by Crown. I'd never have considered it if I hadn't seen it in someone else's house because it's described as cream, but it's not really cream at all. I'd say it has slightly green undertones.

Anyway. I've now done my bedroom and it's just right. Hopefully it will work in most of my rooms. I'm not completely sure if it's right for my upstairs landing as that's quite a long narrow hall with only skylights providing natural light, but at only £20 a tin for the hard wearing wipeable stuff it won't be the end of the world if I have to redo that area.

Thank you for your advice. I agree that it's amazing how different the colours can appear in different lights. The antique cream doesn't look much different to the almond white I used previously when it's side by side, but when the whole wall is painted it gives a completely different vibe.

I wouldn't assume that a colour that looks good in one room looks good in another due to light direction, south facing, north facing etc.
Our neighbours have an old cottage but they have a darkish sage green in the lounge and a darkish cream in the kitchen. They are lovely cosy rooms. There is good lighting over the work areas, and from tablelamps.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 14/09/2021 06:53

Pointing would be great! We have it throughout and love it.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 14/09/2021 14:14

Antique Cream is lovely, OP - my parents had it in the hall, stairs and landing of their old house. Good choice!

whataboutbob · 14/09/2021 16:48

Glad you found your colour can I change. I see I’m late to the party but I was going to say Almond White by Dulux, not yellow or dirty looking or magnolia. Just a nice warm white. In F&B Pointing is lovely.

whataboutbob · 14/09/2021 16:50

@BlueMongoose really don’t get the grey thing either. So cold, there’s enough of it if you just look out of the window.

HotChoc10 · 14/09/2021 18:57

@tangowhiskyalphatango that corner of your home is stunning

Aww thanks so much. I have only just moved in having relocated and spent 9 months renovating the house which has been an utter nightmare! Glad to be in at last Smile

What did you decide in the end ?
