Induction hobs - yes or no?

Hi, having an extension with new kitchen built at the moment and trying to decide what hob to get. Have heard mixed things about induction hobs so looking for opinions/experiences. Thanks.

Yes. I love mine. I've had two (in different houses) and would never go back to gas. They are both Neff. When I moved house, if it hadn't have had an induction hob, I'd have changed it straight away.

Todaywillbegood · 08/09/2021 19:51

I love my induction hob. Expected to hate it but it is amazing. Heats water so quickly and works perfectly with all pans, as long as they're compatible! Went on holiday to a place with a gas hob recently and found it infuriating slow to heat!

Planttrees · 08/09/2021 19:51

Yes I love mine. So much faster than anything else, very responsive and safe to use.

NCfortoday2021 · 08/09/2021 19:53

Can't believe how easy to clean it is and can boil water in seconds!

NCfortoday2021 · 08/09/2021 19:55

Ceramic dreadful to clean and cook with. They look the same so verify which one you are getting!

Fastforwardtospring · 08/09/2021 19:58

Siemens induction with their recommended pans is brilliant, same hob with cheap supermarket pans is rubbish, it’s all about the quality of pans, I love mine, will never go back to gas.

PopcornAndWine · 08/09/2021 19:59

Thanks again. So on pans - is there a way to tell in advance if they will work or not? DH reckons if a magnet sticks to it, it will work. Is that right?

Ask before you buy

TableNiner · 08/09/2021 20:19

Love mine. You don’t get so much grease on the bottom of the pan (compared to gas) and it’s just wipe clean.

Firingpingpongs · 08/09/2021 20:24

Love mine - a Smeg - and would never have anything else now. It’s amazingly quick, clean and safe. It even switches itself off if you forget to (great when kids are cooking, or DH).

I have Le Crueset pots plus a couple of good quality M&S ones

thatfuckingtent · 08/09/2021 20:29

An induction hob should boil water in a minute or two.

It's possible there is confusion between induction and ceramic

If it takes ages to heat up, change temp and cool down, it's a ceramic hob and not the same thing at all.

Our house had ceramic when we moved in and I hated it. When we had a new kitchen I went to induction and it's awesome.
Mine is an AEG 5 burner with a timer on each one. If it breaks, I'll buy the same again.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 08/09/2021 20:39

I’m on the fence about mine - AEG. It looks great, easy to clean but yes, you need to spend money on good heavy pans otherwise it’s noisy. Also, it’s rubbish for some surprising things like scrambled eggs, and jam.
I don’t like that I can’t put anything down on it because of the beeping, and you have to have clean dry hands otherwise you can’t operate the touch controls.
Still a gas fan I think.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 08/09/2021 20:44

Yes. Clean, fast, sensitive to control temperature and no faults

tanguero · 08/09/2021 21:20

Cleaning spills off mine is a PITA.......(and yes I do know the diff btwn induction/ceramic). Prefer it to ceramic....but induction v gas ? Not so sure.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 08/09/2021 21:42

Went from ceramic which was easy to clean but unresponsive and slow to induction which we loved back to gas which seemed so slow and going back to induction.

I like cooking with gas and I’m a good cook, I like cooking, but only once in a blue moon do I think ‘gosh I’d rather be cooking on gas’. And when I do I fire up the gas bbq.

Get a magnet and check your pans. If they're not magnetic they won't work. If you look online you can find plenty of pans designed for induction hobs - check out gourmet pans.
Medievalist · 08/09/2021 23:08

@JosephineDeBeauharnais - I'm curious as to why you think induction jobs are no good for jam? I hate mine because gas is a million times better for stir fries, omelettes - and I agree scrambled eggs!

However, I've cooked jam on it a few times and not had any problems (other than my inability to gauge the right time to stop cooking) but maybe my jam would be better on a different style hob?!

SamMil · 08/09/2021 23:24

We've had induction for the last 10 years or so. Currently got a Faber hob which has in-built induction fan too which is great, but the cheapo induction hob we had before worked well too! Temperature changes are much quicker than gas, and it's much easier to clean.

Veronika13 · 08/09/2021 23:32

@jaundicedoutlook

There are lots of threads on this and they always split into (a) I’ve got one and love it; or (b) I’ve tried one (at auntie Nellie’s / rental cottage / wherever) and hated it.

Those who hate them always suggest that if you’re really good at cooking you’ll prefer gas, which is cobblers.

Personally I have one (Miele) and love it, but I would suggest you find some way to try one first if you’re unsure.

Err we had one and hated it. We are both massive cooks so like the control of the gas. Interestingly the ones who love induction mostly mention 'it's so fast to boil water' so I presume ppl who love induction are not cooking relatively complex meals from scratch most days (we do so gas suits us).

I think that's something to bear in mind.. ask any chef whether they prefer gas or induction. Then go with whether you're a simpler cook (go with induction) or like to spend time in the kitchen (then go for gas) Smile

Yes yes yes

User646326712 · 08/09/2021 23:58

I cook relative complex dishes from scratch and I love induction hobs. Who are you? Ainsley Harriot??

Sum2021 · 09/09/2021 02:26

Could depend on what you cook? Ive had one for 4 years and hated it. When water spills over it burns on and found it very difficult to clean, had to get a scraper etc. I cook a lot and prefer the intuition of gas but also feel onions brown better, spices cook off better. In my new place we have gas and find it easier. When replacing Im sticking to gas on glass as I think that suits my cooking style.

Hothammock · 09/09/2021 02:38

Yes love my induction. Changed over from gas about 5 years ago, which I do also really like but is just not worth all the cleaning agro. Constantly boiling things over on my induction hob due to whizzy boiling and have never had issues just wiping it clean. Never had a problem getting pans either, most seem to be induction compatible nowadays.

Yes it's that simple, though you'll look mad in a shop trying magnets on all the pans!!
LoveFall · 09/09/2021 03:35

There have been lots of threads on this. The majority seem to prefer induction.

It is much more environmentally friendly, but as adjustable, with a quick response like gas. It is also easy to clean. I have a wok that works great on it. It will boil things much quicker than gas. It is adjustable from keep warm, to simmers, to high.

I would never go back.
