How to make this a functional entryway?

Name changed because I'll be posting a few threads in this forum with photos.

Can anyone share any ideas as to how to make a functional entryway when your front door opens almost directly into your front room? We have approximately 80x125cm of hallway space (including door swing) so currently all our shoes, keys, bags etc live just inside the doorway of our dining room, but I'm so tired of looking at them while I'm eating / relaxing! Has anyone else managed to create a useable entryway out of a setup like this??

Can you come out with a porch?

I have a similar entryway, except mine open straight on the staircase, as i'm in a converted first floor flat.
I have coat hooks on the door and a peg board on the wall, on which I drop my keys, gloves, dog leash, dog poop bags etc... (Check Skadis from Ikea).
Shoes just live on the stairs. I'm on my own so its just a couple of pairs that I wear all the time.

You can get integrated storage as part of the stair steps, so each step becomes a drawer - don't know how much though or if this is feasible for you at all..

What @FawnDrench said, or get some storage in your front room that hides everything?

ODFOx · 08/09/2021 20:27

If you can't make your hallway bigger by adding a porch make your dining room less busy by adding a coat cupboard: basically anything which hangs in you dining room does so in a cupboard with storage boxes at the bottom/top, swapped by season. Out of sight, out of mind.

Is there space for wall-mounted storage like these? www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/trones-shoe-cabinet-storage-white-00397307/ You can store your shoes in there and keys, sunglasses etc on top. I can't really tell the layout from your photo but I'm wondering if there would be space to mount them at the bottom of the stairs on the left, and then move the coats to storage in the front room as suggested by pps.

I was going to suggest the thin shoe cabinets and built in stair drawers as PPs have already done. The shoe cabinets can also be used for bags, gloves etc. You could get a set of hooks with a shelf over - some even have cubbies or drawers - and get a bit of storage up high like this but you'd have to choose something quite trim so it works in the space.

Would it be an option to use the back door as your main family entrance?

Locate a freestanding wardrobe (a handsome antique maybe?) for coats and bags around in the front room?

Ladyrattles · 13/09/2021 13:59

My teenage daughter's friends house has an entranceway exactly like this. The front door area is clutter free and just for visitors. The back door is for family and they keep coats and shoes in the kitchen in a lovely unit.

I had the same, we moved the staircase back 1 meter and added under staircase storage. This was part of an extensive renovation.

Change the hang of the front door so it opens outwards . That would free up more room in the hallway.

I think I can see a door frame around the entrance to the front room - could you not hang a door there which opens into that room?
