Mortgage DiP referred to underwriters

Our decision in principle has been referred to the underwriters as part of our mortgage application and it's made me panic and feel all stressed. Please tell me I'm worrying over nothing!

Started our application tonight and filled everything out as requested. Got to the decision in principle part which is the last bit before choosing a product and it said it had been referred to underwriters. It says that they will contact us in 2-4 days and asked for our most recent payslips, which I've sent via email.

Not sure why it's been referred or if that's just normal process. Two things I think might explain why. The first is that the application asks for anticipated purchase price which is higher than the home report value. (In scotland so this isn't unusual) .The other is that I'm in Mat leave and had to put details of in the form.

Is it likely to be one of these things that's flagged it for referral and do I need to worry?? It's with nationwide. I can prove I have sufficient savings for Mat leave and that I'll be returning.

It is completely normal for it to get referred to underwriters Smile it is likely to be the maternity leave that's triggered it as opposed to the valuation or purchase price. They will just want to check you have sufficient money to cover, and could potentially reach out to your employer (with your permission) to confirm your return salary along with estimated return date x

Thanks, hoping it's just that and won't be any trouble as you say. if it is something that I've just filled out wrong then can I change that in conversation with the underwriters or will it affect my application?

Yeah of course, if you filled out the form incorrectly speak to the underwriters and they should correct (although they will likely want evidence of the new correction if it's a material change). If you submitted through a mortgage advisor, speak to them to make the change and they will do it on your behalf. Shouldn't be too much of am issue either way x

I applied for a mortgage whilst on maternity leave and the underwriters just wanted to see my contract proving my right to maternity pay (even though I was taking so long off I wasn’t entitled to maternity pay the whole time).

I was of the view that underwriters always approved mortgage offer

Great thanks everyone, worrying less. Fingers crossed it's just maternity which should be simple enough to clarify

We've just had a mortgage offer through nationwide that went to the underwriters as I was in a temp job pending starting a perm job at the time of applying. Few bits of additional paperwork around my employment and it was all fine. It did however take a really really long time for them to review anything, they would then ask a question and then take another really really long time to review the response. I guess just be aware that if it's taking ages, try not to worry, it's not because there's anything wrong with your application.

It will definitely be the maternity leave that is causing the referral

shineysides · 08/09/2021 16:32

I phoned them today and they were able to confirm it was my maternity that had flagged the referral. Fingers crossed it will be easily and quickly fixed. Im lucky enough to have a great maternity package so will only have a decreased income for a couple of months of my leave so hopefully not a dealbreaker.

Thanks everyone for easing my worries. This moving lark is stressful

Have you heard back yet?

I am in same position as you. Our mortgage advisor sent off our DIP yesterday with nationwide and its been referred. Desperately want to get an answer back as we have had an offer accepted on our dream home and feel this had put it into jeopardy! I am also 38 weeks pregnant and feel I don't need this stress and anxiety 😂 hoping it doesn't take forever! 🤞🏼

@Stephanieemma We were referred doing a remortgage with Nationwide when I was pregnant with DC 2. I don't think it took long to hear back. They just wanted confirmation I would be returning to work on the same pay & terms plus to know our expected expenditure on childcare. I just sent it on email, but didn't even actually have to "prove" it IYSWIM, it was just me providing additional info. Don't stress!
