So we received a photocopied letter though our door at the weekend, have attached a pic.

I am DESPERATE to move, have been for 5+ years. DH reluctant even though we have outgrown this one massively and we can afford to move. I'm so frustrated.

Do you think this sounds like a scam/dodgy? It's signed just first names and with phone number. I have text them (as I hate phoning!) But husband thinks it's probably dodgy and not to give any information.

Has anyone sold like this?

Would you contact these people?

One of my friends has sold her house (and made ££) 3 times like this! Good luck, hope it is genuine and works out.

PragmaticWench · 06/09/2021 11:58

I'm all for people putting notes through doors of properties they like but I think that they are 'property buyers' rather than just people looking for a home sounds dodgy.

mamaweebeastie · 06/09/2021 11:58

My gran has had something similar happen over the years. She was never interested in selling but I have heard of people selling & buying this way. There was a thread a few weeks back but in reverse. I'd go for it, what have you got to loose by inquiring. Good luck

LaVieEstBelle159 · 06/09/2021 12:00

Actually, I've just re-read post. The fact it's photocopied and says property buyers HmmMy friend sold to people who wanted to live in her area and also one of her particular style of houses.

Fingers crossed for you, if they're dodgy, block them.

Time40 · 06/09/2021 12:03

They are, as they say "property buyers", rather than people who are looking for a home. It won't be a scam, but they are most probably the sort of people who will be looking for an absolute bargain. I wouldn't get in touch with these particular people, myself.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 06/09/2021 12:04

For people who say they are 'property buyers' it isn't a very professional approach. That would put me off.

Yes I agree.

I don't really want to sell to a BTL investor type as our street is full of HMO's. We live next door to one and we have been so lucky that they have been long term tenants and (mostly) not a bother. Others are not so great, another reason I want to jump ship! Our other neighbours are lovely and only recently moved in so don't want to make their lives difficult.

I sold a flat once to a buy to let investor, it gave me a quick easy sale and he wanted to own enough to buy the lease hold

As you say lots of your neighbouring properties are already HMO’s I’d jump at it, it’s clear that’s the way your street is going if it’s being targeted by letters like this so better out without estate agents fees than in with even more HMO’s surrounding you

TulipsfromAmsterdam · 06/09/2021 13:02

I think the fact it is hand written makes it look less likely to be investors.
I have a couple of letters in my bag ready to post to some houses in area I want to live as there is absolutely nothing already on the market. You have nothing to lose texting to see if genuine. Hope it works out.

FuckYouCorona · 06/09/2021 18:19

I've done this before several times. You have nothing to lose & everything to gain.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 06/09/2021 18:29

I think this is different to a letter from an interested private buyer. It sounds like some sort of business effort. In which case, it comes across as amateur.

I'd ignore and market with a trusted EA if you want to sell.

maofteens · 07/09/2021 12:12

I was inundated with letter when I put y house on the market. Must were from 'quick sale now' types looking for a discount, but the odd more creative one like yours got through.
If it was a genuine buyer, I'd expect them to be more personal about themselves 'we are a family of five and we've always loved this street and have been unlucky trying to buy before so are hoping you will contact us if your are thinking about selling' with their full name rather than this one. But if you are thinking of selling, and the 'buyers' aren't looking for a discount, then worth a go no matter who they are. But I'd be asking their names googling them before I let them in the door.

Dragongirl10 · 07/09/2021 12:22

If you know acurately what your home is worth and what you would be happy to accept for it (or get 3 EA's valuations )
Send a message saying you may be interested at x price but no less and for them to contact you, only if they are willing and able to pay x and can provide proof of funds.

Give them no personal information at all, until you have a credible reply with name, address phone number and proof of funds, check the address and name out ....

They may be genuinely wanting to buy in your street, and if you want to sell fine.

I have bought and sold directly before, and it has been quick and easy and with no commission to an EA, just use caution and common sense.

QueenHofScotland · 07/09/2021 12:25

I would avoid. I’ve known friends to put notes through doors in areas they want to buy.

This feels more formal - but without the formality of a legitimate company,

FusciasBright21 · 07/09/2021 14:57

So the woman did phone back this morning. They are investors looking for properties in the area and "with a large database of buyers" . We've arranged one EA to come and value this week, then will arrange more for next week. This woman is coming on Friday. Will def get some more information before we decide anything though.

At least this has spurred DH on to accepting we need to move Grin

Please be careful @FusciasBright21

The note doesn't come across as professional in the slightest.

Bluntness100 · 12/09/2021 15:19

Yeah that’s dodgey, I’d steer well clear.

Atalune · 12/09/2021 15:22

I think this is dodgy AF and I would not let them
In my house!!

That letter is so crap looking. Don’t do it

FusciasBright21 · 19/09/2021 12:38

We did end up meeting the investor, but we also got estate agents round to value the house too. Investor said she was looking for £15-20k lower than the EA valuation, which is what we expected to be honest. How else would she make her money ha.

Property is now on the market so fingers crossed we'll be getting an offer soon!
