Microwave seriously rusty/flaky after only a year

We bought a new breville microwave last year when we moved house so it's only been in use just over 1 year and it is seriously rusty and a lot of it has flaked off. We are going to buy a new one over the weekend but obviously don't want the same thing to happen. Does anyone know why this has happened and how to prevent it so it doesn't happen again?

This happened to us with our breville microwave after about a year. Just inside the door. We assumed it was because we used it with a microwave steriliser so it generated a lot of steam.

MassDebate · 03/09/2021 17:41

This is happened with my Panasonic one. No idea why, but I’ll be buying a Samsung next time as I didn’t have this issue with my old one!

stripedbananas · 03/09/2021 17:49

This happened because I was steaming rice in there.

It's the condensation which speeds it up.

purplesequins · 03/09/2021 17:52

it's usually because of condensation.
if you heat up steamy things leave the door open for a bit so it can dry out.
it's usually mentioned in the manual so outside normal wear and tear.

CremeEggThief · 03/09/2021 17:54

That's ridiculous! My microwave is 10 or 11 years old, Sainsbury's own brand, and still going strong with only a teeny bit of rust. Definitely complain!

GillBiggeloesHair · 03/09/2021 18:04

Every microwave we have ever had has done this, no matter what brand.
Glad it's not just me.

Somanysocks · 03/09/2021 19:10

Dry it out between each use as there is always condensation.

mklanch · 03/09/2021 20:18

i have this breville one

its is rubbish!!! all rusty within 6 months!

mareep · 03/09/2021 20:20

Our breville isn't bad 5 years down the line of daily use. We leave the door open to let it air between uses.

I had this with my first microwave. When I met DH he had one with complete stainless steel interior. I wouldn't buy one with a painted interior now. Stainless steel is the way to go.

This reads a bit like you only married him for his excellent microwave Grin

as suggested get a stainless steel one, no rust, leave door open after and check for water under the glass plate...it builds up !

Theunamedcat · 03/09/2021 22:35

Mine has done this too its annoying I've got to replace it again but the last one I replaced had a hole rusted into it I genuinely didn't notice

whatnumber · 03/09/2021 22:36

You need to wipe up any water under plate and leave door open all the time for it to air.
I thought you couldn't put metal inside the microwave? How can they have a stainless steal interior? Am I being stupid?

CasperGutman · 03/09/2021 22:55

Our microwave is about 15 years old and has a painted interior. There are no signs of any rust. It's a Daewoo - do they even sell microwaves any more?

The best way to be confident you won't have this issue would seem to be to go for one with a stainless steel interior, as others have said.

I think combination microwave-grills tend to have stainless interiors because the intense heat of the grill would damage a painted finish.

pinksaint · 03/09/2021 23:15

So I stupidly haven't been leaving the door open after using it, oops! Although we did have a second hand cheap one from my aunty which lasted us years with no issues. Will have a look at the stainless steel ones.

@mklanch that looks like the same one we have but ours is in all white.

Happened to ours after DH started microwaving bacon . However, we do steam a lot of rice ( almost daily ) so glad I read this thread. Smile

Hadenoughcrap2 · 04/09/2021 04:41

I've never had this happen and u don't leave the door open ever as the light would stay in and get very hot (plus waste energy), but I always stick with Panasonic combination microwaves in stainless steel. Not cheap, but my last one lasted 19-20 years and this 'new' one is still going strong and still looks brand new after 8 years.
Iirc, I paid about £400 for the 1st as they were quite expensive 19/20 years ago as they were still pretty new things (especially the combination ones). I paid around £250 for my present one. They were/ are both big ones though, around 50-55cms long and quite deep and tall.

Hadenoughcrap2 · 04/09/2021 04:41

*I don't

Hadenoughcrap2 · 04/09/2021 04:42

*stay on

Same here our last 2 microwaves have been stainless steel interior.

Kimblebee19 · 04/09/2021 07:39

My Samsung one has a ceramic enamel interior and no issues in three years, never bother leaving the door open either. Really easy to clean too and wasnt overly expensive.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/09/2021 07:42

They need wiping down after every use and the door left open for a while after use. It won't happen if it's not left wet.

CremeEggThief · 04/09/2021 11:15

There you go, OP. That's your problem. You should always leave the microwave and washing machine doors ajar, unless they're in use!

Bluepop09 · 04/09/2021 12:01

Omg @mklanch we have that same one too and have the rust issue at the back corner! Ours also randomly stopped heating but started working again after a few days. This is actually a replacement under warranty as the original broke too! Breville have been useless due to this being the second faulty one and just outside of the warranty period, as have Asda Hmm
