Tiny 'nursery' with no window?

Bear with me. DP and I are going to view a flat tomorrow in a building we love because we already live in it.

It's got considerably bigger rooms than our cosy one bedroom place, and in addition to one larger bedroom it has an 'office' of a bit less than 2.5m square. No window in that room.

We're TTC at the moment and I'd thought it might make a good stepping stone on the way to a much pricier 2 bedroom place. I'm fairly certain the 'office' would fit a cot and a chest of drawers and could do us until a baby was around 2, by which point we'd have more saved or be at a point we'd consider moving closer to family anyway.

Is that silly though given it doesn't have a window so can't technically be a 'bedroom'? I understand why that is (fire risk) but a baby would be immobile until rescue in any scenario. Would you consider it?

For reference its 1st floor but has its own entrance.

@JulesCobb Well I am the better off of the two of us but I will marry him anyway, he's the best Wink.

Obviously nobody can guarantee anything but where we live the supply will never be able to meet the demand, so while there are times when the market is slower it is always going up.

If necessary we could move to a choice of much, much cheaper parts of the world where our families live (but it'd be a last resort if we really were priced out here).

I wouldn’t if it was originally part of the lounge you would need to shut the door as surely evening tv would be to loud. I would do as others suggest and save, streamline your things/furniture. A new born doesn’t take up much room at all, you don’t need lots of stuff. So you could live in a small flat with them for a few months at least. With pregnancy this gives you a years notice at least

I may be a bit blinded by loving the building we're in, and it only having 1 two bedroom flat in the whole place, chances of them wanting to move is slim!

@DuzzyFuck have you asked the people in the 2 bed if they're thinking of moving?

I wouldn't put a child in a room without a window. How will you air the room? Bedrooms need fresh air and the option of sleeping with the window open.

It’s not ideal but if there is no room for a baby at all where you are now, and you can’t get anything bigger, then guess you’ll need to go for it.
I’d use the box room for storage though (walk in wardrobe?) and have your baby / child in with you.

The current thinking on SIDS is that it in some cases it is related to poor ventilation and the baby re-breathing their own exhaled air. Babies’ rooms need to be fairly cool as far as possible. The space that you describe sounds completely unsuitable. Sorry.

I've taken on board all comments and cancelled the viewing. Thank you for the injection of sense.

Gosh, no. I'm glad to see your last post. You absolutely can't put a baby in a room with no ventilation. Babies get very hot and it'll be awful in summer. Save up and look for a place with a proper second bedroom.

Rooms without windows are not legal bedrooms for fire safety reasons, so I would not because if there were a fire & your DC could not be rescued you'd never forgive yourself

Its really common to buy a 'stepping stone' but end up there much longer than expected: I really think you should hang on for a year, build your savings & buy a proper 2 bed as a minimum. Friends with toddlers in a 2 bed flat are eyeing up houses... sometimes you just have to think about what you need & chose a cheaper area to get that

DuzzyFuck · 03/09/2021 12:46

@DespairingHomeowner Thanks, that's what we're going to do.

Sadly where we live (an island) means that moving area half an hour down the road or into another county for lower prices isn't an option. It's move hundreds of miles and a flight or ferry away or stay put and figure it out!

If you ever watch Location you'll always see Kirstie ask whether the couple wants children, and steer them towards the bigger place with outside space and more bedrooms if they do.

There's a reason for that. Children take up a lot of room as they get older, and moving house is expensive and stressful. The market could crash, you could lose jobs, anything could happen. Far more sensible to save up and buy what you'll need in five years, rather than something that suits you now.
