Derelict playground hazard

We recently bought our house, and after a bit of exploring found tucked away in a hidden corner of our street is a derelict playground. It’s a terrible hazard, jagged metal and broken and rotted wood everywhere. I contacted the council to let them know, and they informed me that it was private land, and whoever I paid to maintain the land around my house is in charge of it. However we don’t pay any factor fees and no one maintains any shared ground – some houses maintain the land there to them others let it grow wild. This playground is quite small and at the far end of the street from me but is part of the same housing development so I guess I am liable if a child hurts themselves or worse on it? Never mind I have three kids of my own under the age of 6....

The houses either side of it won’t own that land - I’m not going to go knocking on their door about it in case I make a name for myself as the woman who wound up making the whole street pay factor fees! You see I do want to do something. I’m willing to pay my share but I would feel terrible if a child hurt themselves there. I just want it demolished. What do I do? Is the council not obligated to demolish it in absence of a factor? Or if there is a factor , how do I find out who it is? There’s nothing I can see on my paper work

The council don't own it, so are not obligated to do anything.

Could you do a Land Registry search to find out who the owner is?

Why not get do a DIY SOS number on it, get some local businesses to donate time to do it up in return for a sponsor plaque on it? Or get everyone involved in cleaning it up. Wouldn't you want your DC to be able to play somewhere?

You'd still need permission from the landowner though.

LR the way to go.

You need to look on land registry. Have a look at your councils mapping system first. It might give you an idea of where the boundaries for each property are believed to exist.

Is there any social housing on your development? If so housing association might own the land. The other thing to do is search the council planning portal for your estate when it was first built check out the application/106.

Find out who owns the land is your first port of call.
